Default Pinion angle, please verify me

I have been messing with this for so long and confused myself even more. The driveshaft is sloping downward towards the rear and is at 1.5* and the pinion is set downward towards the front of the car at .5*. Since both of those angle are negative the pinion angle is at -2*. Am I correct? I am still getting vibrations when I am driving and are noticeable when on the highway above 65. I have a t56, a brand new drive shaft from Strange and a new s60. Please help before I pull all my hair out.

No, if your pinion angles down at -.5* that's your pinion angle. I set my drive shaft angle at -2*. My motor is pretty much at 0* and so is the pinion angle. So far I've been to 105mph and no vibrations.

I'm a bit confused. You say your "pinion" is set at -.5*. Do you mean the part of the car your torque arm mounts is at -.5?

If so, then that + the -1.5* of your drive shaft would be -.2 which is ok. You could also try lowering it to -1 and see if that helps.

If that is correct it may well do to start looking for other culprits for the vibration.

I just took my driveshaft out and the tailshaft is pointing downward at 3* and the pinion is downward at .8 degrees. If I am reading everything correctly that is (-3)+(-0.8)= -3.8. So should the pinion be pointing up at +1 to equal -2. That is ignoring the driveshaft. Driveshaft is at -1.2 now and the actual pinion (or flat part of the torque arm mount) is at -.8* which equals -2. I dont know which is correct

The second as far as pinion angle is concerned.

I just noticed the torque arm was pushed against the tunnel so I lowered the arm down a bolt and re-adjusted the angle. Hopefully that fixed all the problems.

99SSJarhead- did you mean -2 on you first post. Otherwise where did you get -.2?

If your tailshaft is pointing down 3 degrees, the pinion should point up 1 degree so they will be in phase under power.

If you do it that way, you will have a wicked vibration under no throttle and decel conditions. You should set the chassis of the car level (0 degrees) then set the rear with the pinion pointing downward at 2 degrees. Setting it up without leveling the chassis and trying to do the math gets confusing and most times ends up with it getting set wrong. I had a vibration problem with my s60 install. Ended up being a driveshaft that was too short. I tried adjusting pinion angle a few times to make it better, but it wouldnt work. Once I put the new driveshaft in, I still had a slight vibration until I readjusted it this way. I was told to do it this way be Denny's driveshaft. So I would trust them as a source.
Good luck with it.

Thanks for the input. I tried the one degree up and if felt great until I got 70+. I will try the 2* down. The drive shaft is brand new from Strange. If this next adjustment does not do it I will get the driveshaft looked at.

When you say level the chassis, my car has a 3/4 inch rake and I have been accounting for this and leveling the car at ride height and figured out my garbage has a 1/8 downward slope and added that in too. Should I just leveling the chassis and not messing with ride height.

The rake of the car should not matter. You are setting the pinion angle in relation to the chassis and motor. Since the motor is typically 2-3 degree down toward the rear, it is easier to just level the chassis and then set the pinion angle. If it were a lifted pickup truck, maybe it would be done differently, but Denny's told me this is how it should be done for these cars. FWIW, my strange driveshaft was like 3/4" short which caused a bad vibration in my car. If you still have a vibration after setting the pinion angle, I would look at the driveshaft first.

If your angle measurements are correct, you have something else causing the vibration. I've been 174mph with the above method with zero vibration.

I called the guys at MWC yesterday and he suggested that I stick with driveshaft/pinion method and put the pinion angle at -1.5 and to also rotate the driveshaft 180* and I am not sure which one did it but no more vibrations. I hope that it stays that way. And only 30 more miles until I clean the diff out and get to enjoy the car.
