Default Question about 3rd gen Posi trac

Will a rear end from a 3rd gen fit and work in a 4th gen? Has anybody done it?

they're both 7.5" GM rears so i'm sure the posi unit will work depending on axle splines etc.

the only difference between 3rd and 4th gen rear ends is the a 3rd gen rear is 2" narrower PER-SIDE.

also, some third gens (GTA's, birds...) came with a Borg Warner 9 bolt instead of a 7.625" Ten bolt. So long as both rears have ten bolts holding the cover on and have TQ arm mounts, everything should interchange

You have to watch out for earlier 3rd gen rear axles as well because they have 26 spline axles instead of 28. I think 87 or so was the changeover year to make it 28 just like all the 4th gen rears.

To compensate for the narrower rear you either need to run bolt on 2" spacers on each side or run 3rd gen offset rear wheels. It would be just like someone buying a narrowed 12 bolt or 9" aftermarket rear and needing a different set of wheels to fit. Basically anyone that's narrowed their rear 2" per side is running 3rd gen offset wheels.
