has anyone ever totally built a 7.5" 10 bolt up like they did in CHP and have it broke?

yea i know a 9 sec car will destroy one but im talking in a 11 sec with drag radial and maybe a few 4500 dumps here and there...not 10 times every weekend.

i hear alot about people breaking 10 bolts but i dont think any of them were totally built.

Yes it is pretty sad that GM decided to put that little *** rear in such a powerful car.....looks like I'm gonna have to crack open the piggy bank and buy a rear.

I have heard of people braking stock rears all the time, but I never hear of anyone braking them with modifications done to the rear. Like I said I'm halfway there so I might as well finnish the job with a gear and possi. I will keep everyone posted on the durrability. I'm not saying a 9" or 12 bolt isn't better, but with my needs I'm keeping the 10 till it goes.

I had a 2.77 9 bolt in my IROC and put in a $65 junkyard 10 bolt. It came with 3.42 gears and a posi. I gave the posi to a friend, welded the axle tubes, put in an Auburn Pro posi, solid bearing spacer and T/A alum cover. After low 1.7 60's on drag radials and street abuse w/ drag radials, it's still quiet as a mouse. Makes NO noise. Don't know how long it'll last, but it's done the job so far. This is w/ an auto tranny though too.

I had an LPW cover on with 4.10 gears and sheared 5 ring teeth off after hitting a bump at 4000 RPM. The rearend was still on the stock posi, and axles though. Not to mention a 4.10 7.5 rearend might as well be made out of glass if you run a sticky tire like I was running.

I guess the best thing you can do is beef up the rearend, if you don't have the cash right now for a 12 bolt. However, if you do break it, I would not pour anymore cash into it. 10 bolts can become bottomless pits quickly, and you may find that the 12 bolt was a bargain after you replace a few sets of gears, and axles.

i have the 9 bolt posi in my 1989 formula 350, stock 3.27 gear and i have beat this 9 bolt to death with 1.62 60ft times with 26x10 MT slicks, my car is a auto with a turbo350 trans with a 3500 stall, its a tuned port with all the bolt ons and a ati d1 procharger, so far it has gone 11.47 @ 116mph with 6psi due to belt slippage, but on the other hand my 1998 ram air transam m6 with a 100 shot of nitrous on street tires tore up my stock rear. i guess it depends on your luck.

I still think GM should have a little box to check when you order a car for a PERFORMANCE 12 BOLT REAREND. I would of paid any reasonable amount for that option.
I've been putting off registering but I read the article last night and was reading this thread and had to throw in my .02, what a joke

GM 10 Bolt LOL

I've broke 3 of them so far and one was in an automatic 89 IROC with minor mods.

Another one gernaded on a powershift into 2nd in 3rd gen that wasn't putting out near what a stock LS1 does.

I just bought my 3rd Camaro last Thursday. A 2002 Silver SS with 1900 KM, like new.

Beautiful car, shame about the tinkertoy rear end

**** the box to check. The rearends should be a recall issue! When there are people tearing them up on stock cars I see it as a manufacturing defect that GM was aware of. They have no business selling these cars with shitty rearends their not grocery getters. Use them rears on the impalas and malibus and ****.

When I took my stock Zexel/Thorsen, stock 3.42 geared teb bolt out of my car it had about 25 passes from a 10.3 at 135 mp to 10.8 at 127. All with ET streets dumping the clutch at 5000+ rpms and spraying out of the hole. Best 60 foot was a 1.55. It had one slightly bent axle.

Thay can live....but I like my Moser 12 bolt now.

I JUST broke my first one. This after 99000 miles and countless 1.55 60's over the last 8 months. I like the 10 bolt cause you lose less horsepower thru it.

Maybe I'm just weird.

I am running 11's in a full weight+ car on the stock 10 bolt, with stud kit, preload cover, synthetic fluid, stock 3.23 gears with no problems...now using M&H tires, adding nitrous, etc. Its an auto, so I hope it lasts. I broke the half shaft on my 1990 LPE vette with just drag radials (ran 1.56-1.57 on the bottle on 315 BFG DR's....man that was great...3.33 gears, built 700R4...IRS is king, don't care what anyone says). I imagine I will hurt something this year on the camaro though.
