Any time you are doing break in we recommend not to use synthetic fluids. Most gear manufactures say the same. We use just standard 80-90 in the shop with no name prefernce. Strange uses Lucas products with the rear ends they send out.

I bought a new 9" Ford with trutrack and 3.5 gears, from a forum vendor, and he said the same thing, no synthetic oil, because the 9" needs to "burn in".
I am a little confused, as I am a Mechanical Engineer and worked with a leading German gear box mfg., for years, and never heard of not using synthetic oil. In fact, we improved the life of our gearboxes by 25% by going to Mobil Synthetic oil. Can anyone explain or after break in can we go to synthetic?

Be honest with you there is no testing data to why we suggest it our main reason why we suggest that is because some gear and differential manufactures have suggested it to us. Keep in mind others have said it makes no difference. It really is a preference thing and the only differential I know I wouldn't think about using synthetic on is a clutch style posi.

Myself I have been using non-synthetic for years with out issues so it is just sticking to what I know basically and no other reason.

How often do you recommend changing the fluid in a 9 inch rear end?

Thanks
