Actually if you want to make a little improvement to the 10 bolt I think the girdle is a good cheap improvement. No, it won't make the 10 bolt into a 12 bolt but I really do think there is some advantage in strengthening the case. There are a few 10 bolts around with girdles that have lived pretty good lives. Again, its a minor improvement, but every bit helps.

I had a stock 10 bolt no girdle live with 4.56s with mid 1.7 and 1.8 60s with around 300 total passes. Still in the car with its new owner.

I got a Proform "Perfect Launch" 66667, pretty much an identical girdle for less money and better looks, IMHO.

Also get a tube of Permatex 81182 Permatex® Gear Oil RTV Sealant. A paper gasket will start weeping out the bottom eventually.

A couple quarts of gear oil and 3oz of limited slip additive, call it good.

I have the summit girdle on mine, and it seems to work just fine.. I dont expect the 10 bolt to last forever though, even behind my auto.
I wouldnt waste the time on a gasket. Just pop the cover, and clean the surfaces REALLY well, and use some good RTV.
Probably wouldnt be a bad idea to clean out the housing, and take a look at the parts to make sure everything looks ok.
