OP If you end up doing the heads/cam you're going to want 4.10s minimum because the engine will loose the ability to lug around at 1400 rpm. I've got 4.10s and last year I thought they were a bit much around town but at the track they really performed. This winter I added a cam and just got the car out this weekend. Cammed my car drives great with the 4.10s, better than before the cam. I'm actuallly thinking of moving up to 4.30s. Remember with the .50 overdrive these turn into 2.05 and 2.15 overall gearing in 6th. Highway driving is no problem.

Standard ratio F-body with 4.10's at 80 mph will be right around 2150.

I got 24.5mpg on a highway trip with my 4.10's.

I am slightly over 2k at 80.. its really not too much of a difference on the highway seeing as it was at 1800 with 3.42s. The most noticeable difference other than it being way more fun to drive would be that you shift a lot more around town. I frequently take 3 hour drives to my brothers shop and it doesnt bother me a bit. I would definitely do 4.10s if I did it again and I would also recommend installing them yourself. My 4.10s were my first gear install and it went great.

I thought about the 4.10s a lot, but wanted to leave a little room to grow in the 1/4 mile without shifting into 5th gear, so I went with the 3.73's. I would have had to shift into 5th or spin the motor to the moon to reach 126mph with 4.10s.

There is not much of a sotp difference, the way to describe how the difference felt is that the car just felt much lighter upon acceleration.

I have 4.10's and love them. On the highway im below 2k doing 65-70 ish. I get about 240-260 miles to a full tank for mostly city driving and now i can use 6th to pass on the highway were i couldnt before. You will shift more while racing on the highway and if your a fast shifter it will be fine. It will only improve your E.T's if you got good tires, i noticed in the past with regular ZR tires i got worse times since traction became more of an issue at lower speeds. It will definitly help you get to the top of the rpms quicker and stay there longer especially with your mods, thats super important.

I liked my 4.10s but if I had to do it again I would def go 3.73s. 4.10s just seemed a tad bit to much for me I didnt like the ratios with what gear i was having to stay in.

I did 3.73's in my LT1 (with a couple bolt on's), and felt like that killed my mpg way to much. I will def not run 4.10's in my LS1. for me 4.10's are only good for drag racing and nothing else. I get 28mpg now on the highway with stock gears and if you get 23 mpg with 4.10's (seems optimistic) that's still to much of a loss imo. I'm actually considering 3.55's (if that's even a legit option for a 9") I know it's not much but I think even the 3.73's are a bit much for a DD. This is the same concept as what's streetable, everyone has a different threshold.

I do agree with that statement, whenever i race my friends vette he is always in good rpms in 2nd and im kinda not in 3rd from roll races. I noticed with nitrous at about 60-65mph were most of my roll races are i can be in 4th and running the nitrous i have plenty of power to pull and just start races in 4th and go through part of 5th. I have to shift from 4th to 5th at about 116mph and i havent gone that fast yet but 5th i think goes up to 145mph but not sure.

if you have 3.42s a swap to 3.73s isnt worth it imo, honest i think 4.10s are fine for the street, and they will match that cam perfect imo, i plan to go with 4.30s and i drive my car a ton lol

I'll be going 3.90's myself. I do about 200 miles one way on the interstate. 4.10's simply won't cut it, and as has been said, 3.73's wont even be worth it. 3.90's are a tad stronger than 4.10 as well.

John Ligenfelter went 194+ with a built 1994 LT1 Firebird Formula. 255 tire, 383 LPE motor, 3.23 gears. Hit 194 at the top of 5th gear.
