Help: 10 Bolt Noise
I'm getting a loud ticking sound from either the drive shaft or 10 bolt in my 01' ws6 M6..
The sound happens only when the car is moving so I know its not engine related (meaning I can sit and rev the engine with no problem). When the car is rolling and the tranny is in neutral or the clutch is pressed, there is a ticking coming from the back half of the car.. But when its in any gear, the noise appears to be transmitted up through the drive shaft and is clearly amplified thru the shifter/ tranny area. Its loud enough to mask the sound from the rear end, but I am assuming it's still present. It is speed related and appears to also be throttle related, but sounds like I'm driving a damn helicopter so she's parked until I can get a better idea of whats going on.
Does this sound like a:
Diff problem (shitty 10 bolt)
Drive Shaft (U-joint, etc)
Pinion Bearing
Clutch Issue
Tranny Issue
Let me know what other info I can give to help narrow down the problem.
Thanks in advance!

ahh so thats what that noise was. A chunk of the pinion gear... FML
If you look closely you can see the bearings behind the pinion gear where the chunk was taken out.
Good excuse to add some 4.10s (until I blow those up and finally decide to buy a 9")

Yeah these are/were stock 342s in a stock 10 bolt.. I really wasnt getting on it too hard, Just on a highway cruise when I heard it pop when shifting from either 3rd to 4th or 4th to 5th (dont remember). Car only has 78k miles on it.

hahaha, I thought I would be the cool guy in town for a day or two.. I was just surprised I was able to at least drive it home and then to the shop. Thanksfully the chunk got lodged in the bottom/back of the diff housing, or else things couldve gotten real ugly, really quick

you got pretty lucky it didnt go through the cover. Mine went recently (doing the same thing) but my worm gear bolt on the torsen sheared off. Parts trying to escape are not good. Mine made a big boom and a nice drain hole for me. Only good news is I didnt have to catch any fluid when I went searching for the carnage. Oh well 9 inch in her now

Yeah Im not sure how the chunk managed to avoid everything important and nestle iteslf nicely in the back of the diff housing (especially after gouging the gear housing), but yeah lucky to say the least. I ended up replacing the entire rear end though that had some freshly replaced 4.10s. Yeah, I know I know, they are on limited lifespan also- probably even more so than the 342s, but HOPEFULLY they will hold me over for another few months or so.

my 4.10s lasted 8k miles before the worm gear broke. I think speeding up the unit and the added force when I would bang gears did it. I vote start saving and get used to going fast for a while then do 4.11s in a 9 when it grenades. Do you like the 4.10s?

Honestly I love the 4.10s. IMHO, they are the perfect gear for an M6 and whoever says they are too much for a DD is crazy. Period. end of the "4.10s in a daily driver" debate lol. Yeah I sacrifice some MPGs but you cant put a price on fun right? Its not a prius..

crazy thing is my gears still look good! but thats true more teeth equals less material. And I agree totally on the 4.10s for DD under 2k on the interstate still. And if anyone asks Ill tell them you broke em hitting fifth at 135. Sounds cooler
