Default Change gears or get a new rear end?

I picked up a '00 TA back in october and am using it as my DD. I am hearing a bit of whine coming from the rear when driving down the highway, the sound is not too different from what you might hear from a truck with mud tires. WHen getting on it driving down on ramps for the interstate it becomes a bit more high pitched. There is a rough sound when reversing as well with it having made a popping noise once or twice.

Would it be beneficial to swap out the gears or should I just start shopping for a new rear end? Any advice or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

How many miles? sounds like you need a gear and with the popping maybe a carrier

It is an A4 with around 128K miles. I believe that this is the stock rear end although the carfax when I bought it said the trans was replaced in '06 at around 80K miles. I am not sure what the circumstances for the trans replacement was but if they beat on the car that might explain the issues with the rear.

Yeah if its whining it could either be a bearing or just the rear gear has worn that much. The low roar almost makes me wonder about the carrier bearings though

If it's the carrier bearings I might as well have the gears swapped while everything is being pulled apart. How long would you guys think it is safe to drive so long as I am not going crazy and WOT all the time with it. I won't have any time for at least another month that I can be without the car as a DD. Not to mention I haven't found a place yet that will work on it for a reasonable price.

First thing to do is check the fluid level if you haven't.

Good to know that the bearing isn't an immediate fix requirement. I would like to really avoid sinking money into the 10 bolt if I don't have to. I would love to pick up an S60 but at 2500-3000 it's not something that I'll be able to do anytime soon. I'll do a fluid change on it to see if that helps to quiet it down some since I really don't know when the last time it was done. Thanks for the help guys

I was lucky in the 3 years until the bearing change, could have been worse, the 'noise' didn't increase in those 3 years. Just because mine didn't deteriorate to a much worse situation doesn't mean someone else's bearing would also last that long. A worse condition would be larger broken pieces of those hardened bearing parts destroying other bearings, seals, and gearset.

I'm not looking to leave it as is for 3 years either. I will try some minor band-aids and if I can stretch it with careful driving for long enough to get a new rear then that would be great. I would hate to sink upwards of 1K into something I would replace in the next couple of years anyway. The rear has just moved up in my schedule and the H/C install and induction stuff will just have to wait until after the rear. I appreciate the help

I personally wouldn't mess around at all with a 10 bolt, swapping gears in them is a bad idea. You'll regret it, nothing is as good As the factory heat treated gears. All these after market gears don't mesh together as perfectly as the factory gears and it's just cause for trouble.

I dont regret changing mine but I will also say that they were simply a temporary thing. I knew I would break the 10 bolt and did and I knew I had to expect a little whine going to such an aggressive gear

I don't see why there would be any whine at all, that means somebody didn't line up things correctly when they installed the ****.
