Default ? about 10 bolt durability

So I have tries searching and haven't been able to find an answer

Im looking at doing some engine work to put down around 400-425 hp plus 100shot nitrous

current numbers are 350/370 NA and 430/506 w/ nitrous.

Im currently running a stock rear end with a aftermarket girdle with main cap supports.

I know sticky tires and hard launches kill the 10 bolt, but anyone have any information on how long it would last with higher hp if you went "easy" on it (no clutch dumps and only run street tires). Would a 4-3 or 3-2 downshift snap something or is damage only likely at a stop or very slow speed. I have no plans on going to the track anytime soon and usually only "mess around" on the freeway or on roads that are 45+mph. Dont do much "stop light racing"

I will eventually upgrade to a 9in but wanna know if Ill be forced to as soon as a do the engine mods due to breaking the 10.

thanks for any input

the 'shock' of a 6speed shift can cause damage just like a 'launch' can.

it is covered alot but it depends on the amount of luck that is in the rear. and you should be fine but the prob is you really dont know. if that makes any sense haha

Dude A4 firebird it has a 10 bolt with a girdle. I have 373's, and I run 255/50/R16 Mickey Thompson ET streets, and I launch at about 1000 RPM, and have not broken it yet (knock on wood!) The only thing I have broken in the rear would be a tooth off my pinion. They were Richmond gears too. You should be fine as long as you don't dump at like 6000 hahaha

DOODE, I would call breaking a tooth off your pinion breaking a rear end.
But what I don't get is how you managed to do that with an a4 and a stock stall?

If you build a 10 bolt with good parts it can hold up to some power. A 9" is one of the best rear ends you can buy for many different reasons as far as strength is concerned. However, if that is all the HP you are wanting to make, maybe look into a 12 bolt to save on some power lose through the drivetrain, just a thought. If you aren't too worried about it, 9 inch hands down.

The reality is that there's no way of knowing for sure when the failure will happen, however, know that it WILL happen eventually.

If we were to speculate, I would consider the factors that help speed up the failure:

1. 6-speed (in general). More shock to the rear on the launches and the shifts

2. Sticky tires. One solid dead hook on the wrong surface and it's "farewell and good night"

3. Additional power coupled with any of the two above. Obvious reasons.

I'm in the same boat. Heavily modded + N20 + drag radials + 6-speed and my 10-bolt is still hanging on (ticking time bomb). That being said, I'm gentle on the launches and I've been lucky so far.

I understand that literally any day now I will need a $4K outlay to fix it properly when it goes. At that point, it will seem a bit expensive however that mod should consistently knock a TON of time off of my ET.
