Default How much will I hate life with a spool?

Im hoping to get bills paid off before tax returns so I can get a 9". If I can afford one new with all the bells and whistles Ill go that route. Needs to be 4 channel abs/tcs equipped, basically bolt in and drive like normal in the same day. Anyway if i cant afford a new one ill be looking for used. Most used ones ive seen are mostly spools. I know for a DD like my car a limited slip detroit locker is the best choice, but if worst comes to worse and i cant find one, how much will I hate life DDing a spool?

From what I gathered, a locker and a six speed won't be daily driver friendly either...

i have a tru trac (although in a 12 bolt). It's great in the city and the track! I don't daily drive my car, so if i ever have to rebuild the rear i'll probably spool it, but only because it's cheaper and lighter than a differential

do not get a locker, you will hate your life, you can kick the crap out of it and it WILL take all of it but it is noisey, it clicks when you turn corners you can hear it in the car and outside also, go to a car show and young folks will think your rear is broken...lol
get a Eaton Posi and call it a day

deff go with the true track for DD. i just purchased a s60 rear with the strange true track diff. Its 8 lbs lighter then the detroit true track and holds the same power and is the same diff just manufactured my strange. I chose the 4.10 gears because of my cam and I can say this rear end is just amazing. Im making 440whp and this rear end just feels so strong and beefy. I was going to go with a 9" until i really reserched all the diff rears. Hands down the s60 IMO is the best rear out there. Its a tad heavier then the 9" altho with the diff in mine idk if thats true now. Its strong as hell, hp loss is the same as a 9" and its hundreds cheaper. Talk to Carl at central racing parts he will hook you up and his customer service is the best of any product ive ever purchased. I payed $2700 shipped with matching 3" chromoly DS with 1350 billet yolks and my rear is a fully setup 4channel with abs\tc etc...just something to consider : ) One thing to consider tho, getting parts will be harder for this rear then a 9" if you just go to your local parts store.

Ill look into s60's a little more. Im hoping to make 400 wheel with a cam only/bolt ons car with a texas speed 228r. Ive been told its do-able. Id be happy with 390 wheel on motor. I was a tad concerned with the weight/powertrain loss of the s60 which is 90% of the reason I over looked it. I didnt want to feel like i was lugging around a boulder.

well its the same loss as a 9". the 12 bolt doesnt lose as much but you want to stay away from 12bolts with a 6spd. i notice absolutely no difference in my car from the 10bolt with 4.10s to this s60 with 4.10s. oh wait yes i do...i can lauch my car at 6k on slicks now : )

I use to dd my 6spd with a locker. Once you get use to the locker, its fine to drive.

with that power range i believe you have to step up to the locker or go with a spool. i believe the true track is good for 700hp range

I have a spool in my 9 inch, and if I had to dd it, I'd probably shoot myself in the foot just to avoid it. It's great for the track, but even on just a cruise thru town on a nice day it sucks.

Also keep in mind, if you have a spool and it rains, your going to be fighting it around every turn to keep it from coming out from under you.

Not only is it a pain in the ***, but it becomes a safety hazard as well. I don't think I would wish driving a spool in the rain on my worst enemy.

Lol bww3588.....is it that bad lol. I was considering going to a spool. My car is mostly a weekend warrior with an occasional run or three down the drag strip. My current limited slip (Auburn) in my 9" started to cry uncle when I hit it with my new setup. I was going to use the spool because I hope to be way north of 700RWHP when all's said and done.

i dd my car with a full spool in a 9" and its fine. the only diffrence i can feel is when your backing up it kicks a little. but going forward you cant feel it unless your trying to bomb a u turn. and i got told lockers wont hold anything over 900hp thats why i been running a full spool.

i have a spool in my 9" i dont dd but i do drive my car on the street from time to time, i can't tell the difference, only when taking tight turns or backing up and im running a big tire..On the other hand i have piece of mind that i can let off the transbrake @ 6k and nothing wont brake back there. There's also tons of people DD spooled cars with no issues, you just gotta be responsible when driving, as far as driving in the rain, dont get stupid behind the wheel and you'd be fine...if it was me, and my car was a DD the only LSD i would go with is a wavetrac.. then again it all depends on how much you track your car and your power Lvl.

I have a spool and the car saw light dd duty but mostly just weekend driving. For a weekend driver its fine, but for a dd IMO its a little too much. If you do it make sure you get some upgraded ARP studs.

Got a spool in the crawler. On the street it drags a tire on every turn [duh]. A tire squeals, scrubs on every turn. Just saying.
