Question 3.73 gears with series 2 carrier???

Hi all,

New to the site and would like some help regarding changing my gears. I'm not as knowledgeable about the car specs as many people on this site (though I know a fair amount) so I'm open to whatever helpful tips you all may have. I have a 99' Formula Firebird Auto which should have a 2.73 gear ratio in it right now and am looking to switch to a 3.73 gear (max). I currently have a series 2 carrier in it and my mechanic advised me to switch to a series 3 carrier. When I searched around the site, however, I found forums that stated you can keep the series 2 carrier and just go with "thicker" gears - Saving time and $$$ which is always a plus. Is this true? Has anyone done this before and how'd it turn out? How does it sound? How long has it been that way? I found this part that SHOULD work? Please help! Thanks!

Yes...go with series 2. I took my richmonds back after I read countless threads on how loud they whine. I went with motive series 2 and the master install kit. I had gu2 (2.73s) as well and swapped to the 3.73s. Really wakes the car up. No more 2nd gear lag. Feels like you gained 40hp and a second in the quarter. But a dyno and time cards will prove other wise.

that link is correct for a 3.73 gearset for a 2 series carrier.
it is a richmond gear and there are many that don't like richmond and there are some that do. I'm not gonna enter that debate.
