Default Wavetrac Grinding noise in right turns?

So Ive got a MWC 9" rear with a wavetrac diff, and recently I noticed it tends to make a popping or clicking sound in right turns. Is that normal? I read locker type diffs can do this, but I havent seen anything about wavetracs doing that? If its not a problem thats not a big deal, just odd that it seems to have only recently started doing it? Thanks for any help,

Eric

Are you sure it is the differential and not something else?

There may be some tire rubbing, would that make a sound like that?

Im 99% sure it was tire rubbing. Shortly after I made this post my ring gear wore out on my fab9, when I get it back on the road I'm gonna throw on some skinnier tires and if the noise is there its definitely the wavetrac.

Bringing this thread back up, fast forward a month and Ive got new gears in the fab9, and its driving again. Was on a 17x11 rim which occasionally rubbed so Im using some 17x9.5s for now till I roll the fenders. The noise seems to still be there, and its only in hard right turns at speed that Im hearing a popping/grinding noise coming from the rear. After further research it appears it would be the lca's coming loose, the swaybar endlinks being loose/broken, or maybe something else? My suspension has rod ends all around, and it also does make a bit of a popping noise under straight line acceleration when launching and the susp loads but I think that is normal for rod ends? Any ideas what I should check?

The pass side LCA bolt on the chassis was slightly loose, that fixed the popping sound I was hearing, but the grinding is still there. I drove in an empty parking lot, and only when turning to the right do I hear it. I can turn the wheel all the way to the right and going about 5-6mph in a retarded looking circle it'll grind pretty consistently.

Talked with Eric at Midwest Chassis about it and it sounds like it could be either the differential itself making the noise in which case it'll need to be sent in, or it could be the brake rotors hitting the pads. When I reassembled the rear after getting the gears re set up I noticed that the axles now have some end play in them on both sides, which they did not have before. I'm not sure how that would happen seeing as nothing changed they were just removed and re installed. Any ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe make sure the axle bolts are tight, do you think it could be the driveshaft rubbing on something

Pulled the rims and brakes off, the axle nuts are tights, the play in the axles themselves is pretty small, not enough that anything should be hitting anywhere. I inspected the rotors and I couldnt really see any signs of something rubbing along the edges anywhere, the only thing that seemed odd was that there wasnt a uniform wear surface on the rotors. Pics in this thread https://ls1tech.com/forums/suspensio...tors-look.html

I did notice that there is an L and R stamped on the wear bar on the pads I'm using, and that the R was on the left hand side, and the L was on the right hand side, could that possibly cause the noise? I tried driving in a tight circle to get the grinding noise to occur and applied brakes, but the noise was still there so I'm thinking the brakes are probably not the issue here.

As for the driveshaft rubbing, I havent seen anything that would make me think it is? Where would you expect it to make contact with the chassis if it was?

I'd look where the exhaust is close to the driveshaft

After discussig the situation further with Eric from MWC its looking like I have a bad wavetrac. Pretty lame a nearly $1000 differential went bad but thats my luck I guess. I think I may just get a spool and call it a day.

I drove mine around a little and I just hear the suspension noise, could it be your torque arm hitting the floor board

That would be an idiotic decision especially when the Wavetrac comes with a lifetime warranty...

Stick with the wavetrac man, try the new wavetrac first and if it messes up then get a spool

IF you ONLY care about going dead straight get a spool.

IF you care at all about turning left and right (and braking), fix and keep the Wavetrac.

Waiting to hear back from wavetrac thru MWC and see if they can shed any light on the situation. To the best of my knowledge, which is limited for sure, nothing suspensionwise is loose or hitting anywhere that I can tell. Im gonna meet up with some local guys tonight and see if they can figure anything out I may have missed.

Well I did find that the DS was rubbing on the safety loop a bit so that's probably it. Unfortunately last night my rear also developed a super loud whine/howl from about 15mph up. Can feel vibes in the shift and gas pedal when it does it, and the pinion nut appears to be tight. If it's not the gears having worn out somehow would that be from bearings in the carrier or center section somewhere? I'm about at whits end with this rear end bs.
