Why does my car have a series 3 carrier?
Hey guys. I have a 99 TA that was auto from the factory and I had a T56 swapped in when the 4L60 took a dump. I decided to install 4.10s in it this weekend and when I got the carrier out, I discovered that it is a series 3 with 3.42s! Everywhere I read says that it should have a series 2 with 2.73s, so now I have the wrong damn ring and pinion! Anybody know what the hell is going on here?

It does say GU5 on the door which means it should have come with 3.23s according to something I read. I'm the third owner of the car. The first owner was an old lady and the chick I bought it from definitely never had anything done to it. I called my buddy who's friends with the guy who owns the shop that did the trans swap. He's going to ask him if he put the 3.42 in it.

i thought the automatic cars came with either 2.73 or 3.23 gear ratios and
the 3.23 was the performance gear set for automatics. I thought if you got an SS, WS6, or any performance package on the v-8 f-body that you got the 3.23 automatically but want to say a plain jane z28 or TA could have come with 3.23's also.
it is the gear sets that are 3.08 or higher are the series 3 carrier.

Yeah we addressed the carrier issue earlier in the thread. But I'm still leaning towards the factory screwing up and throwing a 3.42 in there by mistake. I guess it's also possible that the 3.23 from the factory could have broken and then they put a 3.42 in there. It would be a complete waste of time to swap out a good 3.23 for a 3.42 just for the hell of it. Oh well. I got the 4.10s installed over the weekend and so far so good.
