Default 2.73s in an M6 LS1...

what in the heck could those kind of gears possibly be used for in a minor bolt on f body? im making maybe 350rwhp and blew out my rear diff about 2 months after my monster clutch was installed.

on a side not, have 3.90 Motive gears ordered and shipped. are these pretty good gears? I know if they whine from the get go, the pinion depth wasn't set correctly. if that occurs, i will have the shop get back in there and fix it. im not paying 500 dollars in labor to have **** half-@$$'d.

They were used in non SS automatics.
All T56 camaros got 3.42's and SS with auto came with 3.23's.

I know this... my 6 speed manual 1998 trans am had an aftermarket ring and pinion in it, gear ratio being 2.73. I had it inspected by two separate shops and they both said the same thing. The first shop was kind of backyardish so I didnt trust their opinion. Had it towed to AAMCO and they told me the same thing.

I know the STOCK gear ratio for T56 f bodies was 3.42, but as I explained, this had an aftermarket 2.73 ratio in it, at least this is what I was told. I also was told the bearings are all fine, they must have been replaced when these gears were installed.

I am now going with Motive 3.90 gears. I would like to know what I can look forward to in top end with these gears, as I wouldnt mind being able to pull some top end on the highway.

Sure that wasn't 3.73? 2.73 seems awful low for an M6, aftermarket or not. Must have been a slug from a dig and can't imagine MPG would actually be too great at highway given the RPM would be below the ideal range more than likely.

it was a bogging ***** off the line. lol I figured it was a fuel issue bc i also have a problem starting it some time, never thought to check my fuel pressure until recently. weird thing is I could feel the gears were ridiculously long, but apparently my speedo and/or tach is off bc the speeds seemed correct for the 3.42s. I had a formula before with stock gears and I can mentally compare the performance.

I ran Motive 3.90's in my Mustang for over 5 years, and they worked great

Dang, 2.73s in an M6? Can't imagine what a dog that would be. I've still got my 3.23s after my M6 swap and that's bad enough. Can't wait until I get my 4.10s

Ya man who knows what happened there. I have 3.90s in my car and the difference from the 3.42s was insane. 1st gear with traction pulls like a train and 2nd gear pulls hard anywhere from 20 on up

I bought a 1999 Z28 M6 back in '03 from an Izuzu dealer with 9K miles on the Odometer, Hugger Orange for a steal of a price (12K). I picked it up and a few days later took it to the 1/8th track. I went through the traps still in second gear and was like WTF? Put it on a lift, turned it, 2.73 gears....I did some research and found out the previous owner broke the rear and put one in from the junk yard. I could nearly hit 65 in 1st gear with my LTs, bolt ons before i swapped it out.
