Default Dealership Frustration w/ Performance Work ... gears.????

Anyone ever experience this?

Dealership names not mentioned out of fairness. I have spoken with three service consultants, a parts technician, and a parts manager at my local dealership. Trying to upgrade gears from my original '99 TA ... to 3.73 gears. For the past three months they've ALL said I have a series TWO carrier and it could not be done. They based this solely on the VIN number. When I told them the RPO codes from the door panel are GU5 and G80, the senior 'knowledgeable' service consultants said that the car must have been stickered wrong at the factory. he checked to make sure that the VIN number matched the VIN number on the dash.

After providing them the info, they are now waiting to hear back from GM to see if it can be done. Has this happened to you? Is it normal for dealerships to be this clueless about gear upgrades? Even their ASE / GM Certified Rearend Specialist said it could not be done becuse I have a series TWO carrier ... until I drove it to the dealership and forced the issue.

Take the car to a performance shop that does a lot of gear installs - it will cost you half the money and you wont have to argue. Most line mechanics are parts changers and dont want to be bothered with something non-stock..

I agree with the above... if you're going to pay someone to install gears, pay a performance shop or a rear differential specialty shop that does that kind of work all the time. The dealership will charge you more, and have a higher probability of screwing it up while screwing you over...

The problem is that most the the techs dont do this enought to be good at it! It does take VERY special skills to do a gear the right way. My friend had the same issue in his 97. Took it back to the dealer like 3 times becuase it made noise. They ended up just throwing a whole new rear end in the car.

Just as a comparison...

When I worked for BMW, none of the techs were capable of doing something like a gear swap. The whole diff, but not the gears themselves.

But when I worked for Chevy, almost every tech in the shop ( two different dealerships ) were not only capable, but did them all the time. That's where I learned ( plus tech school ) how do them.

In the old days we'd actually repair vehicles, nowadays GM want to replace everything with remans and "service replacements"

its not so much they dont "fix " them snymore a flat rate tech makes more money just replacing the part than repairing it and diag time for them is slim to none. having a flat rate tech rebuild a rear? rather have someone thats gonna do it right and not rush it so they dont loose cash on the job just like an engine no way do i want a flat rate tech on a rebuild unless the are getting paid straight time for it.

That's exactly why I am no longer a flat rate tech. I actually took my time...and lost too much money.
