Default Verify tooth pattern, first time gear install

My backlash is suppose to be between .007" and .009". after mutitple different angles I got a consistent .009"
Here is my pattern.

Looks very decent. I typically run mine on the tighter side for backlash. I shoot for 6 or 7.

I did a couple more set ups and this is my pattern with .004 off the pinion. adjusted my backlash to 7. Does this look a little better?

Looks good to me, I'd run that. Remember to set your pinion only drag to about 20-25 inch/lbs, then install your carrier and look for about 35-40 total, and add equal amounts to each side of the carrier until you get your desired total drag (no axles).

Are you talking about bearing pre load? And what do you mean by add equal amounts to each side of the carrier?

Yes, bearing preload. First measurement is pinion bearings only (2). You want about 20-25 inch/pounds of rotating drag. Once that's set you install your posi/ring gear/carrier into your housing and your drag (from the extra weight) should not increase by much at all. Then you add .005 shims to each side (left and right) and remeasure, and keep adding until you hit approx 40 inch pounds of drag on the pinion with your side bearings loaded. As you shim both sides of the posi, you are crunching the bearings in tighter, you shim both sides equally so your pattern/backlash doesn't move. You already know your pinion along accounts for 20ish of the measurement, so you are looking at another 20 or so inch/lbs added and that would (about 40 total) be directly what you added to the shim packs for the side bearings. Think about it like this, 20 inch/pounds for the front two bearings equals about 10 per bearing, and you're looking to load the side bearings about the same so you are wanting another 20. That way each bearing has approx 10 inch/lbs of drag holding it together. Total drag is important because it indicates all bearings are loaded properly. If not done, you will have ring gear walk and failure upon hard launch.

Thanks for the info, I got it to about 40 inch pounds of total drag minus the axles and filled it up today. To bad I wont know how succesfull I am until my engines finished. Shouldnt be much longer though.
