Axle is built and installed. Looks like I will have to make a custom torque arm due to the stock TA hitting the driveshaft tunnel. Build thread soon!

Well the stock TA gets into the tunnel on a 10-bolt if the car is lowered LOL. My 8.8 mount puts the TA about 1/4" farther from the pinion than the 10-bolt and there's no way you can get it any closer (using the same TA bolt pattern). I'm interested to see what custom TA you come up with.

I'm very interested in this, especially retaining the 4-channel abs/tcs functionality.

I'm at work right now and don't have any pics of the mount I made unfortunately. It essentially locates the bolt holes slightly toward the driver side (maybe .25-.5"). The actually TA I'm going to make tonight should run between the driveshaft and where the mount is, instead of from the drivers side of the mount (like the stock TA does). This should give me the clearance I need.

Also, I had a hell of a time trying to pry the abs ring off of the stock axles so I ordered a new set for $35 from Summit.

If I would have seen this thread sooner I would have invited you to come by and check out the one we built in Shelby Twp.

Looking forward to the pictures of the one you just built.

Writing up the build thread currently.

After everything was installed the abs inop and asr off light were illuminated, and the speedometer was not working. The abs and asr lights went off shortly after driving a few hundred feet. Speedometer is still not working after about a 1 mile drive.

Abs harness is plugged in and tone ring is pressed on correctly along with sensors. Any ideas as to why the speedometer is not working? Maybe a reset process I'm not aware of?

Speed sensor is off the trans, not off the rear end if I recall correctly. ABS light went bonkers probably because the computer lost the speed input from that sensor.

What tone ring are you using? Are you using the 10-bolt sensor in the 8.8 housing? What gap do you have between the sensor & tone ring?

Very interesting. I would think that if the speedometer feeds from the trans nothing I did with the rear would have interfered.

I'll get a change to drive it on Thursday and see if I can troubleshoot the issue any better.

Indeed it was a coincidence; wiring issue.

So unfortunately after all this work I will have to sell the 8.8 I made.
Fortunately, the reason for this is I was just offered a brand new Moser 12 bolt for $1000.

So, if anyone is interested in a build 8.8 (specs below) shoot me a pm. I assume this will go quick. The only thing it needs is a torque arm mount. (Maybe shoot hiltsy a pm?)

I'll post up some pictures once I get a chance.

3.73 gears, brand new clutch packs (shimmed to .655"), Moser 31 spline axles with stock f-body bolt pattern and length (just paid $350 for these), flange yoke. All seals and bearings are in perfect condition, all welds are TIG.
Make me and offer if your interested, I have no clue what to sell this for.

I also have for sale:

-8.8 Diff w/ ring and pinion, 3.73's limited slip. ---$120 obo

-(2) Sets of 31 spline explorer axles --- $50 each

-1 set of 2001 camaro 28 spline axles w/ abs tone rings ---- $100

-Stock LSD with ring and pinion from a 2001 camaro SS ---- $150

All prices are obo, gotta get this stuff out of the garage.

I'll still be posting the build thread! Things have been busy at work and time has been short but it will be very informative and hopefully help some guys make sexy axles.

I had my machine shop setup an 8.8 for me and have it setup to fit the stock tq arm and will clear the tunnel. Even on sport lines.

Here are more pics. Next time around we'll be doing new tubes instead of sleeves.

Are these being welded with an alignment bar?

sorry to bring this back, but why do you want to use 2 driver side tubes on the explorer rears?

Use two drivers side axles. The explorer rearend has an offset differential, so one axle is longer than the other. If you use two driver side axles and extend the pass axle tube to match then flange to flange is only 3" narrower than a 4th gen 10 bolt. Since you already have to change the lug pattern from ford 4.5 on 5 to GM 4.75 on 5, 1.5" adapters on each side solves both problems. Or you could run ford pattern wheels with the proper backspacing. IMHO, custom wheels to match a budget rearend is silly but whatever
