Strange 12 bolt Ring & pinion wear pattern help!?!?!?!
I am Currently in the process of redoing the Strange 12 bolt on my 2000 Camaro SS.
I bought the car with the rearend and 4.11 gears already installed but had a highway whine that was unbearable.
So I decided to install a new set of 4.11 gears/rest backlash and need some input on the ring wear pattern. (Parts Include: All new bearings and new U.S. Strange gear set)
My first step was to use the .027" shims that were on the old pinion gear for a good starting point and with .010" backlash but my ring gear wear pattern was way off.
Since then I have been fighting it and can get a good wear pattern!!!
I am all the way down to
.017" on the pinion shim thickness
I have 22 in lbs spinning resistance on the pinion gear w/ a solid preload tool.
Backlash is set at .010" (Strange's specs .008-.012")
My coast side looks great, but my drive side has a goofy mountain pattern
Going from a few instructional diagrams they say the pinion shims should be removed...
Agree or disagree? .017" just seems like a huge difference from the original .027" pinion shim thickness.

I didnt take any pics of the ring gear wear pattern with the .027" shims.
I will try the tighter backlash, and the pics are with resistance on the ring gear while I spin the yoke.
Thanks for the input.
