Default overtightened the pinion nut

im doing my first 4.10 gear swap on a stock 10bolt. i read up on how to do it. all new bearings and all. i tightened my pinion nut with an impact as far as i could go. i was about to really crush the sleeve with a long breaker bar but first i checked the preload with a beam torque wrench. it showed 100 in-lb which i know is way too much. i could barely turn the yoke by hand. i didnt think my impact had enough power to crush the sleeve that fast. i backed the nut off to relieve the pressure and had to call it a day. and ive got an extra crush sleeve for the next attempt. why did it crush so fast? most people tell me an impact wont do it, you have to use a long breaker and it takes like 400 ftlbs of tq. will my pinion bearings be ok? can i reuse the pinion nut?

Depends on the impact. Good ones can do it. New crush sleeve and new pinion nut. Don't forget the loctite.

Mine would not crush it. Usually when they crush they crush FAST so you have to pay attention. You'll get better with practice.

Default crush sleeve

Dont mean to hijack OP's thread but I was in the process of doing mine the other day too. I got mine to 25-26 inch lbs. Then I removed the yoke and installed the seal and re-torqued the nut tight enough to not crush the sleeve anymore. When I checked the preload again I got 15in lbs??? Not sure if I should have removed the yoke after crushing or not. Was using a rebuild DVD as my guide and that is the process shown for the gm 10 bolt. Also do the pinion bearings need oil when setting preload? I did oil them but again the dvd showed the process being done dry.

You do not remove it once its set. You shoulda installed the seal first.
