check my gear wear pattern, backlash problem
got my 4.10's set up in my stock 10 bolt. pics of the wear pattern are attached. the pattern on both sides looks good to me. the only problem is ive got only .001 backlash. im thinking thats way too tight. these are motive gears and the manual says .007-.009. should i change the carrier shim to adjust it? will that mess with my wear pattern?

.001" lash doesn't allow for any heat expansion of parts and for housing flex.
you're putting on the marking compound too thick and any smearing is hiding the true pattern.
the coast pattern looks OK but the smearing on the drive side is causing a questionable evaluation.
are you A4 auto or M6 stick ?
I typically set up for M6 on the tighter side of the .007-.009 and A4 to the looser side of the .007-.009.
Yes,you should change carrier shims and then you might not get a good pattern without changing pinion depth.
is that current .001" lash measured in only one places or at many points of the ring gear ?
