Would have liked that also, but unforntunatly.. the first pattern was with
old bearings that had been grinded for easy removal.

As it turned out the new bearing had a diffrent pattern.
Hard lesson learned.

Thanks for your honesty.

I've never experienced what you're describing and I've used setup bearings since the very first rear end I've ever built. I don't understand why your pattern changed unless the bearing is physically no good. I do notice that going from a used bearing to a new one brings backlash in .001 but that's it. I generally setup tight so I shoot for 7 or 8, and the new bearing tightens it 1 so Im on the tight side of acceptable, but I do that on purpose.

When I did mine I set it up with a opened up used pinion bearing and my pattern also changed some when I did the final install with new bearings. It was a small change though but I learned next time I'll use a new bearing for set up.

Default Fifth time..

Shims: 0.027
Backlash: 0.007

0.027 is the original shim so it would seem like the new pinion bearing made the backlash decrease (from 0.010 to 0.007).

But still not good.

-Shall try with 0.010 backlash, just to see what happens.

Default Ninth time

Think i get it know, found this guide: http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...4b_Gear_Setup/

Learned that both the backlash and the pinion depth needs to be in the ballpark otherwise nothing makes any sense.

Now have:

shims: 0.020
backlash: 0.010

and it starts to look good:

Im not commenting because the pattern isnt clear enough for my tastes. You really need to drag the ring gear as you are rotating the pinion.

Default Finaly..

Had it apart 12 times, must be a record.

The only guide that worked for me was this one:
( credit to http://www.pirate4x4.com )
Is this pattern any good?-7yuph5m.jpg

And below picture is showing, as good as it get's with these parts.
Put in the drive axels and tighten the parking brake to get a clear pattern.
The drive side looks a little bit strange, contact all over the tooth.
(install depth 3.785, measured with a vernier caliper)

- Almost silent, very tired of pinions and ring gears but happy with the result.

Thanks for all the help and support!

If i ever do it again it will be with two new pinion bearings, one grinded and one for final assembly.
And with gears from a well known manufacturer.
Starting with measuring the pinion depth, so it gets in the right ballpark before checking with paint.
