Default 10 bolt whine?

So I noticed a whine coming from the rear end today. Only really audible at 70mph+ I figured it's an axle bearing, and I know when those go they start to eat away at other parts as well.

I'm planning a rebuild of my ls1 with a good h/c package, hoping for about 450-500rwhp.

I don't want to put money into the 10 bolt cause... well it's a 10 bolt. But at the same time, I'm on a budget. I don't plan on taking the car to the track more than maybe once or twice, just to see what she'll do, so I don't need some bullet-proof rear end that'll withstand 5k clutch dumps. I do however need something that'll keep the car drive-able, but strong enough to withstand those hard, red light launches.

Can anyone recommend me an option that's reasonable in price? Also recommend me a posi diff and gears (and perhaps a place to buy them? Sorry, I don't know anything about aftermarket rears)

Where are all of these people getting money for 500rwhp but not enough to cover supporting mods?

Watch the classifieds for a used 12-bolt, or find someone to fab a dirty cheap 8.8. Those are your cheapest, not necessarily your best options.

My guess is people are on a budget, and considering that the cost of a new rear is equal or more than a cost of a good set of heads... lol

Personally I factored supporting mods into my budget

I had it factored in. I figured that I was living on borrowed time if I kept the 10 bolt, so I was planning on upgrading.

Really all I was looking for was an option that wasn't going to cost half as much as the engine build.

Fortunately, it looks like Quick Performance has a housing w/ axles for about 1k, and I can get an Eaton TruTrac with gears for about 900. Cheaper than anywhere else I've seen lol

They do have some fitment issues if I'm not mistaken. And keep in mind you'll need an adjustable TA to set the pinion angle and maybe adjustable lcas to get the wheels centered in the wheel wells again. So that's another 5-600 but you'd have to do that either way.

Also, wouldn't I need to replace the driveshaft? I thought I was reading somewhere that the new diffs use a different yoke

Yeah you'd need a new D/S as well. You can just put the new yoke on your stocker with the 9" options, but they aren't exactly the correct length, and then that is by far the weakest link. I run a 3" Dom steel PST shaft because it was more or less the cheapest option. You'd need to buy one regardless of the rear you choose though.
