Default 4.10 install

Ok so I went and bought a motive 4.10 set up for my ws6. Plan to install next week. Can somebody give me all the number specs. Like backlash, torque specs. And any tips are appreciated. It is the stock 10 bolt

Nothing really difficult about it once you have done them a couple times and have the right tools. Make sure you have a dial indicator for back lash, a tq wrench for bolts and a small beam style inch pounds tq wrench for setting pinion pre load. A good impact will make crushing the crush sleeve/setting pinion pre load much easier.

I don't know if an impact will touch that crush sleeve as I had to put a 3/4 inch ratchet with a pipe when I popped 4.56's in my 03 Silverado behind a Tremec Magnum. Though sleeve for a 8.5 housing is prolly larger.

Something I found that worked good for me was installing the pinion
( With the Old nut ) , without the crush sleeve and setting the proper pre load until I seen a good tooth contact pattern. After I obtained a good pattern, I installed the sleeve.

Spec recommendations should be in the box.

If you've never done it before, trail and error. You can start with your original shim and go from there. Lots a good info online explaining tooth contact pattern + pics

Tools that are a big help are a pinion depth gauge ( omits lots of trial installs ), housing spreader ( Much easier pulling carrier and installing shims! ), and dial indicator for back lash.

What did you use for setting pinion depth. Since its a new pinion should I just use the old spacers? I saw a depth gauge for sale at summit. Wondered if it was any good

The old spacer from the pinion should get you close, crush sleeves are cheap and I usually have a couple extras just in case. A GOOD impact will have no problems with the crush sleeves, my ingersol rand does them with ease. I have an 8.5" in my car and the crush sleeve was no more difficult then in a 7.5"

Start with the stock pinion shim, your pattern will tell you if the depth is correct. Or buy the pinion depth tool.

I would get a good pattern with around 6/7 backlash. Then set your pinion preload to 25ish and total preload including carrier to 40/45 and you're good. Thing will be as solid as a rock.

So can some explain why the clicker style torque wrench won't work for setting pinion preload?

Because its a rolling torque spec. Sounds like this is your first time.

One of those will work for pinion pre load.

buy a solid pinion spacer instead of crush sleeve.
Pinion depth is most important.

So are the solid pinion spacers a pre set depth? Or is it still a matter of adding and subtracting shims

I also recommend a solid spacer or crush sleeve eliminator. I got mine from Rock auto for cheap

Is there any difference using a micrommeter vs a caliper for rear end rebuilds? Is one tool more useful than the other or are they both just used to measure shim sizes? Thanks
