Default Q. on replacing my driveshaft

The car is a 2002 Trans AM / M6

On the GM direct sites, they list part # 12568188 as the driveshaft (stating its for Auto) and price of $811.

If I search under 1999 model year, I find part # 12564004 (stating its for Manual) and price of $408.

1. Are these Aluminum shafts & should I go aftermarket Steel?

2. Why different part numbers & prices, I thought all LS1 shafts are interchangeable 1998-2002 years, and interchangeable auto/manual.

Buy used for $100 on here. For those prices above I'd be having a fantastic aftermarket one custom built.

^^^ yes. I watch for LS1 driveshafts at swapmeets and their typical price for a good one is $100-125.

i did a denny's for around that price, for a 3.5" aluminum with mark williams forged yoke,
this was to go with a new rear axle i put in the car.
in your case if you need a new shaft i would call some of the custom drive shaft builders and get a price quote, you should be able to do much better on price for the standard 3" aluminum with the 3R u-joints and get a regular dana-spicer slip yoke. you would get the whole thing, balanced, and shipped to your door, and because you took the length measurement you know you'd be getting one of correct length.

only thing i dislike about doing it this way is they don't come with a torsional damper pressed on to the slip yoke.

Inland empire makes a bolt in 3 inch thick walled aluminum replacement shaft. Summit sells it, direct fit. I ran one for a while.

Check out my PST driveshaft prices at this link, the 3.5" alum is the most popular. Bob
