Default Newbie... Rear End Issues

I just picked up a 2000 Camaro SS with 65K mi on it. Has the stock rear end gears which was whining when purchased...

It will just be for street use on nice days.

I brought it to my mechanic and whoever was in there last didnt shim things correctly and over tightened a few things. He found metal shavings on the magnet. He was going to try and put things back together tomorrow and see how it goes...after replacing a few things and making the correct adjustments. I will know more tomorrow...

Do I really need to upgrade to a 12 bolt / 9"? I'm thinking a good rebuild on the stock rear end will give me a plenty of years of enjoyment. Only be driven on nice days etc and wont be driven too hard...

What should I do?

Stock will last if it's setup correctly. You would be wasting your money if you never plan on driving it hard on a regular basis.

Metal shavings on the magnet would be NORMAL unless its excessive.....whining would be NORMAL unless its excessive, I never heard one that didn't whine a little under load<the gears are small and prone to it>...........there isn't very much to setting up or repairing one of these rears even if it needs ALL the bearings.......... If you are told otherwise Good Luck
