Help me read my gear contact pattern
Could anyone give me some advice on this contact pattern? GM 10 bolt, Motive 4.10 gears, just installed with all new bearings, solid pinion spacer, etc.
Backlash is at .006, Pinion depth was set approximately to recommended depth (measured dead on, but my measuring method was somewhat questionable, so it could definitely be off a bit). Pinion preload was a hair above the recommended 25lb-in (about 27). Some preload on the carrier bearings, but not sure exactly how much.
I am experiencing significant gear whine at speed, both under accel and decel, definitely more than I had with the Richmond 4.10's that I broke.

Any idea what else would cause the whine? Preload? I couldn't find a spec for the carrier preload, so I set it to where the shims had to be gently tapped in with a dead blow and the carrier had to be pried out to get it out easily. I know I was a couple in-lbs high on the pinion preload, but figured it was close enough (came in about 27 while turning as opposed to the 25 specified for new bearings). Bearings are timken.

Seal adds 10. I always did the pinions at 20-25 with a crush sleeve (meaning the seal was already installed) and now when i do solid pinion shims i shoot for 10-15 because you can do it with no seal. And yes if you have zero side to side carrier play, add equal shims to each side. If not possible then remove and add thicker ones (equally). Example: remove a 15 shim and replace with a 20 shim to both sides actually adds 005 preload evenly, or whatever combo of shims you have. You can often do it by feel about how the carrier acts while being loaded in, but doubling pinion preload for a max number of 20-30 would be ideal if measuring.
