Default How to build my GM 10 bolt...?

Hello!

Just finished up my twin turbo build. All aluminum LS1 fully blue printed, twin Borgwarner S300s, Th350reverse manual valve body. Going back to the dyno July 8th.

Question: shooting for 1,000whp, mainly street and some strip driving. I have a GM 10 bolt in it, mildly built. But I want to make sure it’s safe when I want to launch it, and cruise on the highway at a good rpm. I did have a single turbo set up last year, 50-60mph it would sit almost 3k in third gear (th350). What gear ratio should I use? Spool or posi? What axle spline?

I’ve seen so many posts, but most of them are for actually drag racing cars. I don’t want to completely change to a 9” if I can use what I have and make it better.

Thanks!

Which GM 10 bolt ? 7.5/7.6235, 8.2, 8.5/8.526 ?
What's the convertor stall rating / rpm ?

It’s the 8.5, and my stall is 3,200.

You also didn't state what the current rear gear ratio is to get that almost 3K in third gear.
Does the trans have a transbrake ?
Your rear has an advantage for longevity as it's behind an auto trans.
Higher numerical rear gear is to compensate for standard power, high power doesn't need a wild ratio. 3.00-3.50 is typical for that high power.

The rear end currently has 3.73 in it, the old owner said. But, if your saying high hp cars should be 3.00 or 3.50...I believe there lies my high rpm cruising.

Based upon the data you gave in your opening post and I'm gonna 'round out'/average some of them. 3.73s' = 2900rpm at 55mph.
3.42s' = 2660rpm at 55mph.
3.23s' = 2500rpm at 55mph.
3.08s' = 2400rpm at 55mph.

It is asking a lot for a 10-bolt to hold up to that power and weight range no matter the transmission. If you did not want to go with a 9" the Strange S60 is a good choice.

Read the 2011 Chevy High Performance Magazine/ Super Chevy article on Building a GM 10 bolt rearend.

Then read the 2016 Hot Rod Network Building a Bulletproof GM 10 bolt with C-clip eliminators article.

Pick what works best for you.

No 10 bolt is (bullet proof) take all the money your thinking about spending and put it towards a s60 With s-trac and your choice of gear. Then pull yours and send in the backing plates. Much better plan.

1000 whp + 10 bolt + sticky tire + traction = BOOM💥!💥BOOM💥💥

I would spend the upgraded 10 bolt money on a better rear end. Of course I broke a 10 bolt once. Car made mere 138 whp & 220 wtq

I've broke 3 10bolt rears. 387hp high rpm cam . Good tires. Shakedy shake. Hop hop. Double pop. Seriously don't make the same mistake as many people have. Being cheap is expensive!!!!

The only way to build a 10 bolt to live behind 1,000 h.p. is to turn it into a 9"!!

Weld the tubes. Get 30 spline axles and eliminate the C-clips.

Your LS1 block will let go before the axle does.
