drive shafts
The determining factor for factory driveshaft selection on LS1 F-bodies was original gear ratio (or one might argue trans type, though this is only true to a lesser degree), it was not specifically model dependent.
There were only two driveshafts: Aluminum and steel. There was no 3rd option. Here is the breakdown:
All M6 transmission vehicles (which were all equipped with 3.42 axle ratio regardless of trim level): Aluminum.
A4 transmission vehicles with base gear ratio (2.73): Steel.
A4 transmission vehicles with performance gear ratio (3.23): Aluminum.
Certain trim levels with the automatic had a mandatory requirement for the performance (3.23) axle, such as SS/WS6/Firehawk - so all of those models would have an aluminum shaft stock, regardless of which trans type they were ordered with, because of the required gear ratio. But, that's not to say that base model cars with the auto couldn't also get an aluminum shaft - all you had to do was order a base A4 Z28 or Formula with the performance axle ratio (3.23) and you'd get an aluminum shaft.
