Need some help with rear gear install. Been struggling with reading the pattern. The rear end is a 12 bolt with a 3 series carrier (Detroit tru-track) All new bearings installed with Richmond 4.10 gears. Currently .034 pinion shim with .008 backlash. I kept thinking that my pinion was too deep. I started at .026 and worked up to .034. The pattern seems to me that it’s centered from the root to the face but I can’t get a nice clean pattern from toe to heal. Decided to try and take a drive with it as is to see how it was. It’s all quiet until I get between 50-60. It then whines on acceleration but not on deceleration. Any insight on what I might be doing wrong or need to address would be much appreciated.
I’m not experienced in setting up gears so the whole time I was reading patterns I was second guessing myself. I kept thinking the pinion needed more shims to more closer to the ring gear, but maybe I’ve gone too far now.
Adding shims to the pinion gear pushes the wear pattern closer to the ID of the ring gear (fewer shims moves it towards the OD............ if you had to be off in one direction, closer to the OD is preferred since there is more leverage there). Shimming the carrier to the left (drivers side) pushes the pattern higher towards the tip of the tooth (and loosens the backlash). There is some interaction between the two shim stacks / movements, but that's the general motion WRT shimming.
