Default 9" or 12 Bolt for my application?

I am planning on getting a rear-end in the next few weeks, but witch one should i get? Mods are in sig, in about 6 months i will be adding between a 150-200 shot of nitrous. Car is a daily driver. Also, what gears should i consider? Thanks for the help.

I'd spring for a nice Strange 12 bolt.

Is there a specific reason for a 12 bolt rather than a 9"?

Given it's a daily driver, a 9" is pretty much overkill unless you want to spray out of the hole at the track or something.

A 12 bolt will probably be a bit easier to swap in and is lighter.

I have a 9". I got it used and it's a leaky ****. I need to fill it with gear oil about every 2 months. I love the fact that I can do 5000rpm clutch dumps at the track (and it's damn fun too) with little worry, but in retrospect, I would have just gotten a Strange 12 bolt (Moser usually doesn't do a good job setting up the gears from the factory).

Either way, 12bolt or 9 inch, spring the $$$ for a new one.

PS. If you're lazy like me, get the brake backing plates already installed on the rear.

Get at least 31 spline axles, but 33 would be better.

Since it's daily driven... 4.11's.

No problem.

But, you only got one guy's opinion [mine]. Don't hesitate to ask around some more.
Also, tell the sponsor what your wants are, and they'll pair you up with your needs.

Good luck!

Sorry to disagree SouthFL.02.SS but with 150 shot of nitrous on a cammed LS1, I would go with 3.73s, even if it's a daily driver.

I went from 4.10 to 3.73 with my 382 stroker and I'm really glad I did!

Why would you go with 3.73's??? Does it have to do with trap speed and the gear i will be in when i cross the line????

Yes. With your current mods, you should be around 370-380rwhp right now. Add a 150 shot of nitrous and you will be over 500 at the wheels. You will bounce the limiter in 4th before the traps and forced to shift into 5th.

I agree that 4.10s is the best gear for your current setup. But if you intend to use that 150 shot on the street with street tires, traction could become a major issue.

When my engine was bone stock (299rwhp/312rwtq) and I had 4.10s, it was almost impossible for me to floor it in 1st without breaking traction, even with 275/40zr17 (SZ50).

The traps/ run out of gear (on spray) issue is a valid concern.
As for traction on the street (on motor), two words: Drag Radials

So what your saying is to get the 3.73's for the 150 shot, and drag radials of course. I have kumo's right now, and they are worn out! What kind of sticky tires would you reccomend?

Point well taken!

I had BFGoodrich Comp T/A drag radials. I never used them on the street but they gave me very good traction at the track at 18psi (13.33@107.3 - 1.9xx 60ft when bone stock). I have no time yet with the stroker.

I've heard that Nitto's have a bit less traction but will last longer than the BFG's.

Well since i just bought a new clutch, drive shaft and am about to get a rear-end, money is alittle tight. So i will have to go with 1 set of tires. So nitto's?? Witch nittos are a good setup? Tires will be driven on daily.

Well, I was just stating that Nitto or BFG Drag Radials on a daily driver will be fine with 4.10's/4.11's for achieving traction on the street, on motor (or at least achieving enough traction to get you going ).

I've never done a 150 shot out of the hole, so I can't render any advice there.

Of the two drag radials (3 if you include the elusive Mickey Thompsons), the Nittos are more streetable than the BFG's. The Nittos will last longer, have better wet weather traction, and have stiffer sidewalls. I've had both and I'm using BFGs right now which I find to be stickier at the track.

I will probably go with some nitto's for street use, they should work ok at the track until i get somethin alittle stickier.
