Default 4th gear whine!

i have an 01 trans am M6 and the car ONLY makes a whine in 4th gear, nothing in any other gear. It picks up the noise around 42-52 mph and increases with speed. Car has 35,000 miles and hasn't had the rear end fluid changed yet since I became the owner at 20,000 miles. let me know what cha think, thank you

That is gear noise in tranny and a rear end fluid change will not help a tranny noise. As long as it does get worse you can live with it for a while.

is this a concern or not? It does not make noise in any other gear but 4th and it whines a lil loud. The noise increases with speed and their is not a constant sound, it almost hums with a break in sound. Hope this gives a better idea to what i'm hearing

Sounds more like bearing or a combo or bearing and gear. Change fluild in tranny and look carefully for metal fillings in it.(if there is it is not a good sign) See if change quiets it down some. If not it really needs to come down sometime but you could nurse it for some time too (just do not pull in hard in 4th until it is repaired as it will never get better on its own otherwise).
