Angry what the hell rear end do i have??

i bought my car from a girl who said she "had some rear end work done to it" some time before i bought it from her. the speedometer was off but i was so excited about it i wasnt going to let an ls1/6-speed car slip through the cracks.

i crawled under the car today and made a mark on the end of the pinion and a reference on the housing. i then spun the tire exactally 1 time. the pinion spun 3 times completly then it went about 1/2-5/8" more and the tire had spun 1 revolution. i was expecting the yoke to spin almost another 1/2 turn if i had a 3.42, or to spin to almost another 1/4 turn if i had a 3.23. ITS NOT EVEN GOING THAT FAR. say 6 oclock was my reference point, the yoke spun almost to 7 oclock after the third turn.

what all gears could have possibly been installed in a 10 bolt? it seems like its less (numerically) than a 3.23 but it does make more than 3 turns so it cant be a 2.73. im thinking she had problems, took it somehwere, and said fix it. then they just threw some random gear set in it .

so what gear do you think is in it?? no wonder why i can always hook up so good off the line!!!

Could be a 3.08 if it were changed. Pull the cover and check the numbers on the gear to be certain. If it is a torsen or even an open diff, it is hard to get an accurate estimate. If it has been worked in, it could be anything.

Also, you are saying 3-1/2 to 3-5/8 turn, that could be a 3.42 or 3.73. But then you say it only went from 6 to 7 o'clock.

no im not saying 3 1/2 or 3 5/8, my mark, went another 1/2 inch past my reference mark lol.

3.08 sounds close. i bought some additive the other day, i planned on changing the fluid this weekend. mine has the auburn unit (G80), at least i hope it STILL does!!, i guess ill count 'em up if its not stamped somewhere.

i was thinking there was a ratio real close to 3.00, is there anymore?? im royally pissed off about this. im about to put a new clutch in and im not going to run a good clutch on such a small rear end, it will kill it sooner. but then again i dont want to spend all that money on a 4.10 and have it break or not be able to hook up.

I have a rear end that has never had any work done on it. You could sell yours and buy mine

how many miles on it?? by no work did you mean it even has the stock gear? if not which one? did you have the damn t-rex/3600 while it was still in??!!?

i had actually thought about buying a complete 10bolt but im just skeptical about the dependability. i can keep the one i have in my shop if the one i buy pulls the ole on me. oh yeah how much?

One more thing... did you have someone hold the other wheel to keep it from moving? I think you actually have to hold one wheel, spin the other wheel TWICE, and count the driveshaft revolutions (in neutral, of course). Maybe it is only once... i cant remember now.

40 teeth on ring gear, 13 teeth on pinion

Well..... now if you want to go to a 3.23 or better you will need either a new carrier, spacer, or a thick gear.

what if it has the stock stuff just a 3.08 ring and pinion set? couldnt i just put 4.10's or 3.42's in it? just like if it had never been touched from the factoy, only a different gear set thrown in it.

the these gears have always whined from about 45-70, and there does seem to be some slack. i can move the backtire back and forth and there is some slack between the ring and pinion. could this mean the depth is not set right?

damn the 10-bolt and all the people who have worked on mine

No, you would have to change some things. Whoever changed it before had to change the case already.

Just buy a 3.42 complete rear.

They go pretty cheap, cheaper than paying someone to change out the gears (unless you can do it yourself, in which case just ignore this).
