Default Grenaded the 12 bolt this weekend.....

Made 2 passes with it dead hooking launching at 6200 rpm. Third pass dumped it and it just went "pow" and didn't move. Looks like the spider gears exploded and took out the ring and pinion too. See attached pic. This was a 800# Eaton Pro unit. Looks like I'm going to need new spider gears, springs, side plates, and a R&P. Hopefully the posi case isn't cracked too.

Anyone have any tips on rebuilding the Eaton? Do I need special tools to compress the springs? Any other advice for making it stronger BESIDES a spool.

Damn.... that makes me want to

I was starting to overlook the howling the rear makes because it has been holding up good... is yours the 33 spline stuff with the heavy duty posi like mine? I'm ordering a set of 4.56's for mine this week and having a really good rear guy go thru the whole thing when he sets them up.

Yep, 33 spline, 800# posi, good setup, everything. The gears had been getting noisy but that's not unusual after a bunch of high rpm dumps on slicks.

It stripped EVERY tooth off both of the small spider gears.

I recently switched from a 26x11.5x16 ET Street on a 8" rim to a 26x10x15 ET Drag on a 10" rim and all I can say is that the traction difference is night and day better. Probably why it only lasted 4 passes after switching tires.

I'm looking at the heat treated U.S. Gear spiders for a replacement IF (big if) I decide to put it back together.

M6 + 12Bolt=Boom, I have heard of alot of 12bolts getting trashed with M6's, Wonder if the 9" would be a better choice???

Well, the only stronger option would be a 9"/locker or 9"/spool combo. Even if I did have a 9" with a clutch type posi, this would probably still happen.

Man that sucks. With all of the whining problems and now more and more are breaking with M6's, I am leaning towards getting a 9 inch with a locker when it's time for a new rearend. You could always try a soft locker (Pro Stock John has one)...I hear they are quieter and less of a hassle on the street but still very strong at the track. But I don't know if they make these for 12 bolts--as far as I know, only 9 inches.

Yes, this does suck. I haven't seen a "soft" locker for anything but the small 30 spline axles.

Sorry to hear that!
I also broke the spiders out of my 12 bolt Moser with the same setup launching at 4,000 on a 315/35/17 Nitio.

I plan on putting a Detroit Softlocker into my 12bolt. I run them in my Wrangler's rear and front diff's and once you get used to them they are awesome, even driving on the street everyday. Almost indestructable strong to boot.

I want to know this too... I'm having my 4.10's swapped for 4.56's in the next week or so and I'd like to stick one of those in there.

Here we go Gomer.....http://www.tractech.com/Products.htm#locking

Detroit TrueTrac
PN: 914A575(PA) 33 spline, 4 series, 12 bolt
$405 from Randy's Ring & Pinion

Wish I knew someone that has been throwing some regular abuse at one of those units to see if they hold up well before buying one though.

Downside is that it's not rebuildable.

Found some more interesting info on the TrueTrac....

Apparently the angle of the splines for the 33's only matches Moser axles. Good for us, bad if you have a Strange 12 bolt.

Are you sure that this is their soft locker? I thought the soft locker was just an option you could get with the regular detriot locker. Plus, it says that this "truetrac" is for commercial vehicles. I honestly have no idea, but just making sure you know what you are getting if you are going to buy it. It might be worth a call to tractech. But if that is right, that may be exactly what I want--a 12 bolt which weighs less and eats less power, with the strength of a locker 9 inch. Also, check out powertrax.com (may be another option). That is another option for a differential. Or even call Randy's, I'm sure they know what is best. Just my 2 cents.

This doesnt make any sense you can purchase an 33 spline eaton posi and it will fit the moser or the strange 12 bolt so why would this exclude the true trac

I just finished replacing my spidergears, the exact same thing...about 5500 rpm with ET streets. You will need to disassemle the rear and clean it out with brake cleaner and run rags through the axle tubes to get all of the shavings and gear bits out,Dont forget.
