Default Which is the best!

Hey Guys,
I have a 2002 Z28 A4 with a lid and magnaflow exhaust. I recently ran a 13.7 at 105 with a 2.4 60ft. Horrible I should say..Anyway, I have 2.73 gears at the moment, Its a daily driver, so would 3.42 gears be good? What kind of changes would I see with 3.42 and a Predator Tune.?? I was wanting 3.73 but I dont want 2500 Rpm at 70 right now. what do you think?

Well 3.42's would help but I'm not sure of how much... My first time to the track with nothing more than a lid and a single chamber flowmaster in the place of the stock muffler and 2.73's I went a 13.49 with a 2.29 60 ft. @ 105.43 mph. The track was not prepped very well, went to another track (1/8th mile) the next weekend and was cutting 2.02 and 2.03 60 fts. and ran a 8.48 @ 86.34 mph. Which should equate to about a 13.1 + or - a little in the quarter. I would try working on the 60 ft... With a 2.0 to 2.1 60, you should go low 13's all day. And going to a 3.42 I think you may only pick up a tenth, maybe two at the most. I'm planning on keeping my 2.73's and installing a convertor real soon. People are typically seeing a .4 to .6 reduction in 1/4 mile times. Plus the 2.73's are stonger, and will give you better gas mileage. But I guess it could all depend on your future mods and what you want to do.

Do stall and tires first, then gears.

If its just a daily driver and to the track every now and again I would say get the 3.42's. But if you are thinking of a cam later down the road go with the stall.

Agree. I went from 2.73s to 3.42s primarily for around town driveability - and I love the difference. Your traction problems at the track only get worse with the lower gears (and even more so with a stall).

I'm also thinking of doing the 2.73 to 3.42 swap. Does it pull considerably harder throughout the rev range with the 3.42s?

i know you have 2.73s but when i went from 3.23s to 3.73s i only rev about 400 RPMs higher in OD which isnt bad.

if i was you id work on getting better traction before adding anymore mods.

try some nittos.

Yes, quite a bit ... the car is much more satisfying to drive. But if my car had 3.23s like my LT1 Formula did, I would have stuck with those. The only time I liked the 2.73s was at 80mph+ on the freeway.

I have a 02 A4 with the same mods as yours. Magnaflow CB, Predator Tune and K&N FIPK(had a lid and K&N filter before) but never changed my times switching. My best run with 2:73's was 13.54 on a cool day. My typical run was 13.6. With just the swap from 2:73's to 3:42's I ran a best of 13.15 on a warm day. On 80+ temp days all summer I ran 13.2's and doesn't vary like it used to, before I'd run a 13.6 and a 13.7, now I'll run 13.22, 13.23, 13.24. My 60 foot times with the 2:73's were 2.2's and sometimes on a good day I'd get a 2.150. Now I run 1.94's all day long, lower my air in the street tires to 26psi and punch the gas at the 3rd yellow on the tree. So I gained a 3 to 4/10ths gain just from the 3:42's. Traction is slightly worse and but not bad and overall I am very satisfied. Highway driving is around 2,200 rpms and gas mileage changed very little. I'd say get them, everyone said to me get 3:73's, but my concern was same as yours, also, then I'd have traction issues at the track.

gas milage and performance dont go together... pick which one u want...im doing 4.10's and a 12 bolt in the next 2 weeks...gas milage will suck, but will have a way better hole shot with some M/T drag radials...go fast or go home just IMO.

either way the lower the gear (higher number) the more fun it is. id say at least do 3.37's.

HAVE FUN!!
