I HAVE A FRIEND WITH A 99 SS HE RECENTLY CHANGED OUT THE REAR END BUT THE GEARS ARE GOOD THE CAR IS SIX SPEED WITH 3.42 MINE IS A A4 WITH 3.23s IF SWITCH THE GEARS WILL IT EVEN BE WORTH THE TROUBLE WILL I EVEN NOTICE INTHE 1/4 MILE

Many people are having great results running 3.42's in their A4 cars. There will be a small performance gain in the 1/4 mile w/3.42's. Don't expect more than 1/10th and 1/2 to 1 mph. It's a perfect match for some stall converters... Others are going to say "you're wasting your time", but many say they love the 3.42--A4 marriage. Also: Change the whole rear--it's easier than swapping gears only, plus if it's quiet now, you know it'll be quiet after swapping the complete rear... best wishes. WJ

Im one of the ones to say you are wasting your time. Go 3.73s in the A4 or just go home! When you MOD, MOD BIG !!!!!!

I swapped to a rear with 3.43's from 3.23's...but that's cause my 3.23's were making some lovely noises...(I thought I always had the 3 Stooges with me..and occasionally some banshee's...) Like someone else already said..if you're going to swap things...swap the rear end assembly..much quicker..much easier. The only case you won't be able to do this is if you have a 3 channel setup (abs only) and he had a 4 channel setup (abs and traction control) unless you don't mind losing your abs in that case. I noticed a small difference when going to 3.42's...but part of that could have also been I was going to a rear that was working properly.

I wouldn't recommend just swapping the internal guts over...your more likely to have gear noise and other problems afterwards.

If you're current rear is on the way out..or having issues...I'd say swap it now..otherwise...hold onto that 10-bolt of your buddies as a spare just incase yours breaks.
