Default what is in this thing

I just bought a 2004 gto a4 TONIGHT AND I'M MARRIED SO I HAD TO GET A AUTO! what is the rear axle in this thing it looks like a dana 44 but not exactly it needs some hella lower gears i run 4.56 in my truck with 40 inch super swampers with alot of new rear axles think it could use like a 3.90 or 4.10 gear to make it faster i plan on a patriot stage III head and big cam right away [my freind owns boos performance im minneapolis] what do i order for it i don't want to spend 800.00 at slp for gears any info will help a ton thanks 1meangmc

Yup it's a DANA 44,but there is something about the gears(do'nt know what) that make them some expensive ****'s.I believe I saw them at one of the vendors on www.ls1gto.com in the $400 area.Good luck with the new ride.

If you can get me a tag number off of it I will call Dana when I get to work and get some info on it. If it doesnt have a tag it will have a number stamped into the rear diff mounting frame section. It should be a 606xxx-x number.
