Default 3.23 swap to 3.42 or 3.73??

My car is going into the dealer on Monday to get new lifters since it ticks real loud and it never goes away and the dealer said they could do gears while it's in so I was wondering if I should go to 3.42's or a 3.73. I have an A4 and hate having it bog down if I floor it at low speeds like say 5-10 mph. It also seems to kinda lose momentum when it gets into 2nd gear so I think a lower gear would cure it. I do plan on getting a torque converter in the future but that's later on down the road so take that into consideration. Thanks

Gears will make the car a little livelier off the line, but nothing like a 3000 stall converter will. Keep your stock gears and do a converter like a Vig 2800 or Yank 3000. It will drive like stock, but you will really haul *** when you put the hammer down.

Gear swaps also require programming changes to the pcm which adds to the cost of conversion.

Completely agree with Patrick. Keep the stock gears as long as you can. Just use that money towards a converter. It will make a HUGE difference and you won't need gears, plus you will keep the good fuel mileage.

Changing gears also screws with shift points and sometimes the converter lock-up. Not worth the trouble in my opinion.

I agree with the above.

Switch to 3.73s if you do switch, the but the big gains will come from a converter.

I definitely agree w/ getting an aftermarket converter first. You can see .6 or more in the 1/4-mile from a good torque converter, and you certainly won't see that from a gear swap! I recently swapped to 3.73's, and I don't regret doing it at all. However, it was further down on the mod list as I ran out of things to do.

Make sure the "Save Weight by Sending My Cash to Ragtop" mod moves up a few more spaces on that list.
