Default Is it normal for the my Differential cover to be HOT after driving?

After driving about 30 miles today, I was underneath my car messing around. I happened to touch the cover on my Diff...it was VERY hot. Is that normal? Wouldn't that signify near-boiling differential fluid?

My fluid level was fine ( and I just changed it about a week ago)

Normal? Abnormal?

Yes, it will be hot. No, the fluid will not be boiling. If you check the level in the differential cold the level will be maybe a 1/2" lower than when it is hot. It will be real hot if you drive 30 miles with almost no fluid in it.

Yes its normal. That's why you do heat cycles when breaking in new gear.
