That's rediculous. Call around and ask a few performance shops what they would charge to install a set of OE GM gears for. Probably about that price with labor and materials ... the whole job.

gmpartsdirect.com: $481.50 shipped (and I guess there's been a price increase because last July I paid $422.18 shipped).

Call Randy's, National Drivetrain, etc....any gear seller can get the OE gears to you for around the $200 range.

I wanted to be 100% sure I was getting GM gears so I went with getting them from a dealer. The extra cost over getting "Motive OEM" gears and not being sure if they're really the same as GM gears was worth it to me; in my case, I only spent $150 more.

There is no such thing as "Motive OEM", so I would be leary of any seller who refered to them as that. They will come in a motive box because they are bought in bulk from AAM w/o packaging and cannot be shipped that way. The OE gears are sold under the oe number and will have the 8 digit GM number stamped in them. I have sold and installed a lot of OE gears, and any decent gear seller wouldnt misrepresent their product like that. You never can be too safe, but if you are dealing with a good shop you shouldnt have to worry.

Thank you - this what I have been trying to say. You get what you pay for.

If you buy an OEM gear from Randy's, etc or from the Dealer you are getting the same thing, from the same plant- just different packaging. You will also be paying at least $200 less than from the dealer. Dont waste your money.

The local F-body and Vette guru in my area only recommends Motive gears and he has installed them all. And no, he doesn't sell them. He maintains that they are the quietest gears and that Motive is the same as the GM gear. I don't know if he's right or not, but he has a clientelle that comes to him from a 200 mile radius to get their LT1/LS1 engines, stalls, transmissions, gears, and whatever else a person may want. The thing he insists upon in a gear swap is a solid piece rather than the crush sleve. He maintains the crush sleve is the problem with perfectly installed gears that are then exposed to the torque of the LS1. He's going to install mine this summer and I'm going with Motive and the solid piece rather than the crush sleve. I just haven't decided whether to go to 373's or 4.10's for my DD M6.

What's the going rate to install gears? I'm tossing the idea around of swapping in some 3.73's and would like a ballpark figure to go by. I'll probably get the GM gears.

I believe the price I was quoted for the install was $250. Besides the gears I have to buy a mini install kit. It looks like the gears and install kit will be around $200 delivered so a total around $450.

I had 3.73's put on today, and it cost me $475. I am happy with the feel of the 3.73's also...just what I was looking for. The 4.11's are much more dramatic, but the 3.73's gave me what I wanted for my daily driver. I like the feeling of the pull you get with the 3.73's, the 4.11's are just too quick. IMO you just don't get to enjoy the pull of each gear with the 4.11's, just alot of tire spinning and burnt rubber. When I get a 12 bolt I'll probably go with 3.90's and some sticky tires though.

Cool. That was including the gears themselves? The 4.10's would be too much for my daily driver, but they'd be fun on the weekends. I already have my Nitto's so I just need to get off through the gears a little quicker
