Default Got my 4.10s

Got the 4.10s installed in the 10 bolt. So far they are quiet as stock. It added a ton of driveability to my cam only setup. Less noticeable cam surge/low rpm bog and added lots of acceleration in 1st gear. Really helps that dead zone from 1500-4000rpm cammed cars have. Can't wait to try it out. Hopefully it doesn't blow. I did re-dyno the car with the gears in it and my rwhp dropped to 381/365, down from my 399/374 last time out in March. But the shop was 25 degrees hotter and the humidity was 20% higher so maybe that had something to do with the HP. BUT both numbers were SAE so.. I knew the 4.10s would hurt some but...18-20hp is quite a bit.

Either way I am quite happy with the gear swap and wished I hadn't waited so long to do it..

It's normal to have lower dyno #s. Your engine is still making the same power, it's just the ratio is not 1:1 anymore, so you don't see real numbers.

What cam do you have? which gears did you get? I'm intested in your car and how it will perform, since I plan on going the same route(4.10s and H/C).

Did you go to the track before? What times did you pull? Go to the track now!

you don't lose the 1:1 gear ratio.

here's my dyno when i swapped from 3.23 to 4.10 gears. lost 13 rwhp and 24 rwtq

MRR23, my curves resembled your losses to a T. We overlaid the new curve over the old one and it was roughly 20hp across lost. BUT we only made one pull after the gear install so maybe a 2nd pull would make another couple of ponies.

Odessit, the cam is a Magic stick MS3. Stock heads, stock TB, stock pulley. I have taken it to the track one time and it was a turd:

60'--2.06
330'--5.59
1/8--8.37@88.54
1/4--12.72@113.93

You can tell by those numbers that the 330' is about a half a second off(.50) of what it should be. The 1/8 should be around a 7.80@92-93mph. I am hoping the gears will help alleviate the lack of low end torque. It feels pretty good on the street now. Although it is starting to whine on decell now with a few more miles on it.

one thing when dynoing, is try to dyno at the same temps. it's hard to do. have to be there at the right time. mine was 4* difference with the advantage going to the 4.10 gears. also, i make sure the engine temp is the same at 185*. i use my autoxray scanner and watch the engine temps. i start the run when the engine temp is right at 185*. people don't think about that. engine temps will vary your dyno results as well. if ai had a trans temp gauge i would make sure the trans temps were the same as well. i do my best to minimize the variables.

I'm thinking that 4.10s is a must with high cam to keep the car more streetable.

Take the car to the track with gears and let us know the results

Ok I gotta know. Why does lowering the gears take away horsepower?

Thank you, I read it all, it makes sense, I never would have figured that. I would have thought no change, or a little higher because the motor had to work less. If you have a lot of dyno experience, may I ask? I ran 390 HP and 355 ft/lbs torque with 4.10's What would your guess be if I had 3:73's? I am asking because a similiar car with similiar mods with 3:73's made 412 HP.......ok...so I have been a little sad trying to guess why....LOL.

But it's not about the dyno numbers. With 4.10s and 390hp you are still faster than with 3.73s and 412 or so.

MRR23, well my dyno test after the gear install was really pathetic. The guys in the shop were rushing to get out to close shop early so they only made one pull on motor. NOt sure what the water temp was. I do know that the shop was 24 degrees hotter then it was when I dynoed in March and the humidity was like 20% higher. I would think that would hurt power also but the numbers were SAE both times so shouldn't that equal them out?
