GU2 vs GU5..Need answer quick ..please
If anyone saw this thread...
https://ls1tech.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ulti...c&f=8&t=001181
I had ordered a gu5 formula..It came in as a gu2
I was told that they can swap out the the rear.
But (with help from ls1tech), I was reminded that
this includes an aluminum driveshaft..and of course
a reprogramming/or new PCM
I had a thought.
If they are willing to swap the rear, would it be possible
to try and work our a deal with 3.73 or 3.42 gears?
Maybe they can do it..and warranty it?
Does GM (factory..or the performnace catalog) offer these gears?
And if so..should I also have em put in the aluminum driveshaft with such a setup?
I just got off the phone with em...
If such a thing can be done I may go for it...
But the upshot is...does GM offer 3.73's (or 3.42's) under any other package that would be covered under warranty?
Quick answers will help decided my fate!
I raised this possibility...
Put in 3.42's..and I'll eat the difference on the cost of the gears...
And what would that be? A few hundered bux?
Also, they'd have to swap tires..getting rid of the crappy RSA's
So..they are going to check into the feasibility of
doing this..
Now..because you cant order 3.42's on a factory A4,
,(as far as I know anyway) but can have it done by GM anyway (sorta like the 'ol hurst packages or others that are still covered by GM)
This may turn out to be a blessing in disgiuse...
But...Would the steel driveshaft be better/stronger for such an application? Or should I still (if this deal is possible) demaind the aluminum DS??
Help Help!!

What do you plan on doing Mod wise? If you are going to be a bolt-on guy for awhile get the aluminum DS. Hell the only person I know had problems with the Aluminum DS is Nineball. So get the aliminum DS!!

I'm not doing any big mods...
Just the basic stuff...induction, exhaust..maybe converter.
So.. what are you opinions on going with this setup?
Provided the dealer bites on the compromise...
The steel shaft is a little bit sturdier. The aluminum shaft is quite a bit lighter. Your pick. I'd go with the aluminum and if I broke it (very unlikely with an A4 unless you get really serious) I'd go aftermarket.
Will they program your computer for the gears? My dealer didn't know how to do this since none of these cars ever came with 3.73s. Maybe yours can? If not, there are of course other ways.
BTW, there should be no cost difference between 3.42 and 3.73 gears.
I offered the compromise with 3.42's (safer)
And yes..I would expect them to change or reprogram the PCM for this.
If the steel DS is 'stronger' then It may be wise in the long run to let em off the hook for it??

I'd go for the 3.42's why not.
Alum driveshaft is just lighter.
I run a stock steel one in my car for safety reasons.
First thing...
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR RESPONSES!!
I just got off the phone with the dealer..
The confirmed that a 3.42 gear IS POSSIBLE!
Right now they are working the numbers to see what it will be as well as the work that will have to be done.
Provided the numbers look good, I think I'll go for it.
Basically what this means is
3.42 gears.
PCM programming.
New Tires (It shipped with crappy RSA's)
No new Drive Shaft. I was told that the 02 comes with an aluminum DS..even with 2.73's
Can anyone confirm this?!?!
And if not, how can I tell the difference if I were to inspect it myself??
I think I can except this deal as 3.42 gears are not an option from the factory.
BUT.. If GM parts are used, and GM installs it, I would expect to have it covered under the standard warranty.
With the rebate, I still expect to come out ahead.
Hmmm..this may turn out to be a bit more 'custom' than I thought!!
I should have more info in a few more days.

Bring a magnet with you and get under the car and see if it sticks to the driveshaft. If it sticks, it's a steel driveshaft.
I'm glad to hear that things worked out for you in the end!

White out on the door..
I figure it this way...if I like the deal, the work they expect to do, and it doesnt cost me alot, WHY NOT?!?!
I'll play stupid and put my faith in GM and their techs to do a good job...
At least I'll be able to except it as a 3.42 geared car 'from GM'...
Hey..dealers can slap on stickers body trim and cover it as part of the warranty...why not gears!!

We shall see how this plays out...
I'm ordering a new car...
They backed out on the 3.42 install and want to charge me big for it...
