Default Do I HAVE to use a gasket on 12 bolt?

Changing the fluid in my Moser 12 bolt and was just going to use the red RTV sealant instead of buying a gasket. Anyone done this?

No. I havent used one in 15+ years on any of my clients chassis or even on my own.

The best sealant is "Wacker" which used to be carried by DANA/Spicer, but it is getting hard to find..... guarenteed not to leak.

The next best sealant is "Toyota engine packing". It runs about $22-26 a tube, but it wont leak either.

In reality, surface prep is the most important. I use non-chlornated brake cleaner to wipe the surfaces down and then trhow down just enought sealant.

Thanks for the info. Now, I'm just wondering if I should 1) let it completely dry before reinstalling the diff. cover. 2) Let it dry for a few minutes and then install the cover. or, 3) Apply the sealant to the cover and immediately install the cover and just snug the bolts up then wait a few minutes then torque them dow to spec. Not quite sure the exact procedure as everyone seems to have different advice.

You apply the sealant to the rear end housing and immediately install the cover then you torque them down to spec.
