What exactly makes a 10 bolt weak?

What exactly makes a 10 bolt weak? I know that there are probably several things, but I was wondering if it would actually be a benefit to try and beef it up...or just drop the cash on a 9'.

I've also heard alot of bad things about the case being weak and having excessive flex. code4 is right about the small ring gear...upgrade to a 3.73 or 4.11 and you have more teeth on that same small space and it gets even weaker. Some people have twisted axle tubes in the housing, snapped axles....Pretty much anything that can break will. Some have beefed up a 10-bolt enough to take some abuse, but they go through carrier after carrier.

The leading weakness to a 7.5", 10 bolt, is the pinion shaft diameter. Next would be the ring gear diameter and pinion gear head size.
Blatantly, the parts are just too small for the application.
