rearend making bad clunk

Default rearend making bad clunk

ok i had a 12 bolt installed with adjustable panhard and LCA. It has alway seamed to make a banging noise and feel like it was jumping around a little at slow speeds and i had this for like 2,000 miles. So yesterday i was on the highway and doing about 65mph and some fool in a Turbo acura wanted to play so we went at it and the next think i hear is like a really bad loud noice so i thought it was my transmision so i put it in nuatral and its still there then i think it is my rearend. The noise was really bad on deacelerating and not to bad on aceleration. so i jack the car up to look at the rear end and as the car at the back on the subframe it was making a banging noise as the tire was coming up. and doing the same when i was lowering it! I think the noise is coming back up to my transmision also! Any ideas? By the way the car has a turbo and is making 500 rwhp and 500rwtq

Check your torque arm make sure it is not bent. If your torque arm is bent then your rear end might be raised causing your driveshaft to hit stuff on bumps. Also check your driveshatf to see if there are any dents or metal stripped off. I had to replace torque arm/ driveshaft due to the same problem. When decelerating from say 60 mph to 40 it sounds like a horrible gear grinding noise and when going over bumps it feels like you have no suspension at all, just metal banging. Hopefully I am wrong but whatever you do don't drive it anymore, hopefully the damage has not reached your transmission.

i can see the tire clunking as i lift the car and when it comes back to the ground cant see it when the tire is off becouse no load on the suspension

yup broke the tourqe arm off the top of the rear end the noise were my springs hitting th bolts. Is it common to hurt the trany also?

As long as your driveshaft is okay your transmission should be fine. And even if the driveshaft is damaged your transmission is probably okay. You have to make sure with those Moser 12 bolts that you tighten your bolts very frequently. That could be what did your torque arm in. Or it could have been normal wear/tear. Factory torque arms are not the strong points of these cars.I would install a new torque arm and see if that solves it. You're going to need that anyway. I'm about to install my new torque arm/driveshaft so i'll keep you posted.

Oh one more thing, with those big horsepower/torque numbers I would get a torque arm that mounts to the chassis as opposed to the tailshaft of the tranny. Will be a little more road noise and possibly more bumps but will definitely reduce the stress on your transmission.
