I went from 2.73 to 3.73. It was a BIG difference. By far the best mod I had done at the time. 2.73 to 3.42 to should be about the same...3.42's aren't a big change from 3.73's

Just did it to my car. Definitely a noticeable difference, car is alot more fun to drive as it got rid of the 'laziness' my 2.73s caused, particularly in around town driving. Mine's a daily driver, so I didn't want to go all the way to 3.73s or do a stall (yet...).
Car is much more 'awake' now though
Are you installing new gears? or just replacing the whole rear with one out of an M6 car (easier and usually cheaper).

I did afew years back great improvement, also get a aluminum drive shaft (9lbs less of rotating weight). It all helps, you will have to reprogram your shift points.

i just put a m6 rearend in my car with 3.42's and i could tell a big difference from a stop. and after i got it dyno tuned it made a huge difference at the track! in the 1/8 i went from running constant 8.9-9.0 to running constant 8.5's spinning a little and my 60ft went from 2.1 to 1.9 in street tires. hope this helps ya out....

i also have been thinking about the gears, i was leaning towards the 3.73's but the 3.42's sound better for freeway driving, even though this car is not a daily driver, it is more for fun and i take it to the track sometimes.

3.42 is a good choice for a streetable daily driver.
That's what I went with and noticed a good difference in ET's and the car's pull.
I lost a bit of HP and a lot of top end. The car used to top out @ 162, but now it's somewhere in the 135 range, but then again, I get there a hell of a lot faster now.
I still have to get off my *** and reprogram the shift points to get the full benefit from it and my stall, but I'm seriously considering Heads and Cam in the next month so I don't know if I'll waste my time tuning.

Yes, I am using the series 2 carrier, and an 3.42 "X gear set" (Wide gear set)
Haven't had any issues, other than a leaking pinon seal.
The easiest & cheapest way for you to do the gear change is just buy a used 3.42 rear end from a M6 person who is going to a 12 bolt or 9".

2.73's to 3.42's
I did this on my 95 Z28 A4 and what a diffence it really woke the car up. I gained .3 at the drag strip and 3 mph.
It felt like a diferent car! well worth doing IMO
Gas mileage was hardly affected and you soon get used to the slightly higher revs when crusing around. I think 70mph went from 1900 rpm to about 2400rpm from memory
I then changed to 3.73's and the car didn't feel that different the revs were slightly higher again gas mileage was hardly noticably.

I'm thinking my converter is thrashed. I've still got the "Transmission Component slipping" DTC being thrown.
I'm probably going to replace my Vigilante 3200 with a new Fuddle 3600 and then take the Vigilante to a shop to get rebuilt, and slap it into my 01.
You can check my Garage out from the Mods link below to tell me if you think that MPH is low.
