Default Question on changing tranny fluid.

I'm going to change my transmission fluid and I heard its pretty simple so I'm planning on doing it myself to save money. So I just want to make sure I got my facts straight. After I have my car jacked up, do I just take out the plug, let it all drain out, put the plug back in, and refill fluid into the dipstick? I'm not doing a flush or anything, I'm just switching to synthetic. Thx.

You will have to remove the pan to drain the fluid. Our cars from the factory do not have drain plugs.

Ahh, forgot that. So I just remove that pan and it drains out.

I would reccomend removing the fill plug first to be sure you can get it out. I know it sounds stupid but if you can't get it out for some reason, you are stuck there and can't get fluid back in the thing after you drain it. Just a simple precaution.

ahh.. on a A4 you would have big problems if you couldn't remove the fill "plug"

But.. that is great advise for a M6 owner

As others have pointed out, the stock pan does not have a drain plug, you have to drop the pan, no big deal. This is a messy job... Also after dropping my pan, only about a gallon of fluid came out. I think the fluid capacity of the A4 is 11 quarts??? someone jump in if they know. Whatever the capacity is, you won't drain all of the fluid by just dropping the pan, maybe half.

I would think twice about using synthetic transmission fluid. I have heard the synthetic is too slippery.

Hmmm...I didnt' know that. So the only way I could get all the trans fluid out is to do a full flushing? And I would need 11 qrts to refill it?

You could always disconect the Inlet hose to the stock tranny cooler in the radiator. I made my buddy hold it into a bucket while I started up the car and it shot out like a fire hose
