Default Question on pinion

Is it normal for a 3.73 pinion to be smaller than stock 2.73 pinion ?
I am getting my gears changed out and my machanic took my old
ring gear and pinion out and got worried when he saw the size diffrence.
He said I had the wrong ringear and pinon for my car. Said he could get me a brand new set.I told him ok. Well he got it and was looking at it and saw that it was the exact same as the one I had. He said all knew to do was bolt it up and see how it fits. Thanks in advance

If ya had 2.73 that is a different size carrier ya will have to run the thick gears or swap out the carrier!

Dude, seriously......get a new mechanic asap. That guy has NO clue.

2.73 has 15 teeth on the pinion, 3.73 only has 11 teeth......hence, it HAS to be smaller, thats how the RATIO is changed. They both have 41 tooth ring gears. RUN AWAY NOW!

I seriously doubt there's a difference between 98 and 99. The number of teeth will remain the same, as will the size of the gear. I think he's full of crap. 11 tooth pinion is an 11 tooth pinion, and sized accordingly. The 13 tooth pinion will be noticeably bigger. This is part of the reason some people advise against the 4.10's in a 7.5" rear, as the small pinion is simply too small to be effectively strong. All 7.5" GM ring gears will have the same ID, but also, sized accordingly to the number of teeth. You might want to keep an eye on the posts before the hand in your wallet.

EDIT: make sure you're getting the proper thickness gears for either a 2 or 3 series carrier. do a search, your stock gear ratio will determine what you had. I believe 2.73 and taller used the 2 series carrier, 3.23 (?) and shorter used the 3 series.

I think that is where the problem is coming in is the series 2 or 3. The gears that came out of it the pinion was thicker than the one that we had to go back in it.

Shorter gears (higher number) may be thicker on the ring side to compensate for the smaller pinion, but what you're saying may be true. Be sure to check

A 2'73 gear set has the serries 2 carrier and the 3:23s up have the 3 serries this is what I was talking about in my previous post! Anytime you put a bigger ratio on the 2 series ya have to get the thick gears they sell to use that carrier or buy a new 3 serries carrier with the standard gear sets!
