i guess keliente is living in the stone age...synthetic oil is the best thing you can put in the rear. Why do you think gm put it in there from the factory?

Why don't you use private messages if you have something nasty to say about me, 99pontTA? I'm sure the original thread starter would like to read everyone's replies without your drama. Or maybe you just get off from making fun of women publicly, I'm not sure.

That aside, I contend that synthetic is not necessary in a 10 bolt. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion so I am fine with agreeing to disagree

sorry to revive an old thread, but since i'm doing searches on the topic, i thought i'd chime in.

although it may not be 'necessary', i feel it is interesting to note that the manual on my 2001 says to use synthetic: 'use SAE 75w-90 synthetic gear lubricant (GM part No. 12378261) or equivalent meeting GM spec. 9986115.' it also says to add the LSD additive (part no 1052358). i did read in another thread that torsen themselves states it is not necessary to use the additive, but just a precaution.

I have Royal Purple 75w90 with the GM additive. It comes with synthetic and the additive from the factory. Why would you change it to non-synthetic and no additve? Doesnt make any sense.

Personally, I've seen better results from the regular gear lube than the synthetic......I get more noise from the synth it seems

It's very likely that you have a Torsen (a stock SS rear end). You can open up the rear and look at the differential. If it's all gear inside, it's a Torsen. If you see springs and clutches, it's an Auburn. A Torsen should have something that say "Torsen" on the case too. I heard that you can also put the car in neutral and turn one the rear wheels but I don't remember how this method works.
