zexel 99 auto ss, just put it in the shop for rear end noise, shop says differential is shot, metal everywhere. he says it say zexel on the defferential, in what ever book he looking into it say only 2000 to 2002 only had the zexel differential. is this true? can i put in a different differential in it, and where is the cheapest place to get one. it has 3:23 gears and has abs and traction control. factory rear end
The Torsen makes shavings every time you do a
one-wheel peel. That's its nature, metal-to-metal
bind but once it starts to slip, it starts to scrape.
The simple presence of shavings, does not mean
the unit is "bad". Used, abused maybe. But it can
go on for a while before it gets uselessly sloppy.
I had about a tablespoon of shavings in mine but
no obvious difference in performance, at about 15K.
But I put a T-2R anyway.
You can find stock Zexel chunks for cheap, low miles or
take-outs. Maybe $50-$75.
