Default Strange Gears...

I can't find any decent sets of gears that come with complete w/ the rack/pinion and the 3-series carrier I'm going to need. Thunderracing sells Strange gears and they say they're thicker and I can use them w/ my 2 series carrier. Are they even worth it? I hear horrible things from everyone that has the completely Strange rearends. Are the gears by themselve any better? Where's the best way to get a complete 3.42 w/ the correct posi?

Gear noise is primarily dependent on the installer. That being said I too have seen alot of assembled rear ends for Strange which were noisy. After a new gear was installed by a better installer they noise was at a much more acceptable level.

I put a Yukon 3.42 in mine (thick ring for a series 2 carrier).
Backlash is fine and the contact patterns also, but it's noisy.
The vendor told me if I wanted a quite rear end it was better to buy a new series 3 carrier and original GM parts. He personally installs gears and he told me that thick gears may or may not be noisy, no matter how gooy you install them.

AAM gears are quiet and just as strong as the aftermarkets. See sponsor sales and GP section for more details.

You mean ring & pinion not rack & pinion.

If you have a 2-series carrier there is nothing wrong with getting 2-series gears to match...like they told you, the gears are made specifically for that carrier. My strange gears will be here next week, but for the meantime I have Motives...they were nice and quiet. I also installed a set of Richmonds which were a bit louder.

The noise really depends on the install. If you hear a lot of whining you need to take a closer look at it.

If I had to do a 10 bolt over again I would get new Motives, because now in SummitRacing they are offered with a bulletproof guarantee.

If you are looking for a complete 3.42 setup with a 3 series carrier, buy a whole rear end. People get rid of them left and right when they move up to 12 bolts, and you can find an entire 10 bolt rear end for less than $300, you can save a LOT of $$ that way.
